The Samuel H. Kress Foundation seeks a part-time Accountant to work two days per week providing accounting/controller services.

Founded in 1929, the Kress Foundation, an independent charitable trust in New York City, devotes its resources to support the work of individuals and institutions engaged with the appreciation, interpretation, preservation, study and teaching of the history of European art and architecture from antiquity to the dawn of the modern era.
Position Responsibilities
Reporting to the Deputy Director, the part-time Accountant will be responsible for maintaining the Foundation’s accounting systems, accounts payable, payroll, the budgets for grants and operations, and for preparing monthly financial statements. The Accountant will assist in the preparation of the Foundation’s local, state and federal tax returns, and will be the primary liaison with the Foundation’s auditors, preparing audit schedules and responding to auditor requests. The Accountant will also liaise, as needed, with the Foundation’s investment management team, who oversee the endowment. The Accountant will assist with preparation and presentation of financial reports at meetings of the Board of Trustees and the Finance & Audit Committee.
Position Scope
Accounting systems: The Accountant will maintain accounting systems to record, classify and present the Foundation’s accounting transactions, including maintaining general and other appropriate ledgers (such as fixed assets subledger) on behalf of the Foundation, and will perform a monthly reconciliation of the Foundation’s bank statements and statements provided by the Foundation’s investment advisors.
Accounts payable: Cash Management, Etc.: Working with the Deputy Director, the Accountant will process and prepare checks, expense reports, and wire transfer orders for grants and accounts payable for approval and signature by the designated Foundation liaison; remit such payments on behalf of the Foundation when they have been approved and signed; and assemble and file documentation related to processed wire transfers and paid invoices. Accountant will also manage the Foundation’s weekly operating cash balances and prepare a monthly report on accounts payable and disbursements and projected operating cash needs.
Payroll: The Accountant will administer payroll on behalf of the Foundation, including the recording and processing of ADP-issued payroll checks or electronic fund transfers, maintain records of wages and taxes paid and payroll deductions; process 403(b) and other retirement plans and maintain other employee benefits; and coordinate the issuance of 1099s and the review and annual reconciliation of W-2s with respect to employees and consultants etc.
Budgets: The Accountant will work with management and other staff of the Foundation in connection with its annual budgeting process for both grants and operations, will coordinate a variance analysis tracking the Foundation’s actual expenses against budgeted expenses in its monthly and annual financial reports, routinely reconciling grant finances with stand-alone grants database (Pearl).
Financial Statements: The Accountant will prepare and review monthly and annual unaudited financial statement of the Foundation, including a balance sheet, statement of activities, statement of cash flows, and any notes thereto, as well as any applicable year-end accruals. All such financial statements shall be prepared in accordance with GAAP and shall fairly present the financial position of the Foundation. The Accountant will work directly with the Foundation’s auditors to assist in their production of annual audited statements, including preparing standard year-end audit schedules, with such assistance from Foundation staff as may be required.
Investments: The Accountant will record investment activity, in addition to reviewing and reconciling the monthly investment summaries from funds, the investment manager and custodian.
Qualifications
Required:
College degree with accounting/financial major
CPA.
Minimum five years accounting experience, preferably with nonprofit fund accounting experience
Strong working knowledge of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, 403(b) and other retirement and benefit plans, income tax and banking procedures; experience with endowments and recording/reconciling investments
Excellent written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Computer competency and familiarity with PC accounting packages, and extensive electronic spreadsheet experience
Must have experience with Sage (Peachtree)
Strong commitment to the organizational mission and to high-level performance essential.
Sound judgment, integrity, and sensitivity to and respect for colleagues are especially important in an organization of the Foundation’s modest size, where teamwork is essential to effectiveness and the maintenance of a collegial working environment. The ability to work collegially with other Foundation staff and with Trustees, and interest in and a strong commitment to the Foundation’s mission and charitable programs are key qualifications.
