Accounting Manager – Environmental Defense Center – Santa Barbara, CA

SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is supervised by the Executive Director and is responsible for the accounting, bookkeeping and benefits policy and administration functions of the Environmental Defense Center.

Required skills for this position include: accounts payable; accounts receivable & invoicing; journal entries (including the ability to identify the need for and make adjusting entries); bank reconciliations; inventory and depreciation; cash flow management and analysis; production and analysis of financial reports including balance sheet and income statement; management of funds held in trust and restricted accounts; budgeting; payroll; experience working on audits; and employee benefits administration.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential functions of the job include but are not limited to:

Ensure EDC’s compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Maintain EDC’s chart of accounts; determine revenue and expense classifications.
Cash disbursements including accounts payable, petty cash and credit card disbursements.
Cash and credit card deposits.
Client invoicing and accounts receivable.
Journal entries including non-cash revenues and expenses, payroll, and adjusting entries.
Manage equipment inventory; calculate and record depreciation.
Manage grant funds, funds held in trust and other restricted funds: track balances, maintain records and prepare reports for specific programs and projects.
Payroll and personnel: prepare payroll reports for service, track vacation and sick accruals; prepare Form W-9’s and Form DE-542’s, maintain personnel files.
Benefits administration: Work with HR contractor to assure new hires have complete information on benefits. Assist in negotiation of insurance contracts. Track SIMPLE IRA contributions and match.
Cash flow management: Prepare and analyze cash flow projections and reports.
Design and prepare financial reports including monthly financial statements (balance sheet and income statement) as well as special reports for staff, board, and others.
Perform monthly bank reconciliations; manage EDC’s cash accounts.
Coordinate and participate in budget preparations including EDC’s annual budget and individual project budgets as requested.
Coordinate and prepare for annual independent audit; work with auditor to review and ensure accuracy of audited financial statements and information returns.
Maintain accounting files; keep accounting manual up to date.
Develop and implement new accounting systems, policies and procedures as necessary.
Assist with facilities maintenance as requested.
Attend occasional Finance Committee and other meetings.
Attend and assist with fundraising events as necessary.
Continue education to ensure EDC’s compliance with GAAP, legal and tax requirements.
