Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative assistance to its Asia Division. The Asia Division works to advance human rights in Asia and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy and media work. The position reports to the Washington, DC-based Asia Advocacy Director and China Director.
Responsibilities:
Providing day-to day administrative support to Asia Division staff, such as scheduling, making travel arrangements, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems, word processing, photocopying, filing, faxing, answering phones, processing incoming mail, and responding to request for information;
Maintaining communication among all staff locations, headquarters, and other HRW offices in order to ensure efficient support to the Asia Division;
Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and web content;
Coordinating and supporting US government advocacy, including scheduling official meetings, managing subscriptions, and building and maintaining contact databases;
Attending external working-group meetings and occasionally representing HRW at meetings and events, including with researchers and other colleagues;
Assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires and translations;
Assisting with planning and executing roundtables and special events with visitors, NGOs, and government officials;
Retrieving and responding to requests for information;
Recruiting, coordinating, and mentoring interns;
Recording departmental finances; and
Carrying out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in international studies, social science, political science, Asia studies, or a related field is required.
Experience: A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience is strongly preferred.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; fluency in another language (particularly Mandarin, Cantonese, Hindi, Tamil, Urdu, and/or Farsi) is highly desirable.
Strong interest in international human rights is required.
Strong interpersonal skills are required and the ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously are required.
Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current United States work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at $42,765. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and twenty (20) days of vacation per year.
