Bookkeeper – The HistoryMakers – Chicago, IL

Bookkeeper sought for The HistoryMakers, a national African American nonprofit educational/archival institution (http://www.thehistorymakers.com). Annual revenues are $2 million and seek to grow to $3 million annually. Bookkeeper will report directly to Vice President, Business & Operations. The person hired must be good at file management and extremely organized. He/she must have 2-3 years of prior fund accounting and business management planning experience.

EXPERIENCE:

1-2 years of accounting experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
1-2 years of experience in journal entry preparation, financial statement review, and monthly closing process
Not for profit experience a plus

DUTIES:

Maintains subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and posting transactions
Process credit cards payment for event and product sales
Process monthly AP and maintain AP files and AP check log
Maintains historical records by filing documents.
Compile/Verify numbers for month end process
Produce monthly analytical report and associated journal entries
Prepare/finalize monthly journal entries and produce monthly financial statements
Reconcile monthly credit card statement and bank statements
Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing reports; advising management on needed actions
Prepare and assist independent auditors during annual audit
Assist Vice President, Business & Operations for daily operation
Assist Vice President, Business & Operations for special programs and events

COMPUTER SKILLS: QuickBooks, MS Office (Word, Access, Excel) and FileMaker 10 or 11
