Campaign Manager / Major Gifts Officer – Mount Angel Abbey – St. Benedict, OR

Leads and executes major gift fundraising for projects and campaigns outlined by the monks of Mount Angel Abbey in their strategic plan, while working closely with the Abbey Foundation Board of Trustees, Director of Development, Capital Campaign Chair and Committee, and Development colleagues. Designs and implements a broad-based fundraising plan focused on support from individuals and foundations.

Essential Functions:

Implement and manage capital campaigns and related projects, as determined by the monks of Mount Angel Abbey.
Serve as the “natural partner” for 100 lead and major donor prospects by achieving the following: Schedule visits, meetings and events with donors and execute solicitations; manage prospect lists and research; develop and execute targeted cultivation plans, solicitation strategies and stewardship activities for a range of prospects; lead the staff, board members and volunteers in their solicitation efforts; develop outlines and talking points for cultivation and solicitation meetings and events.
Together with the Director of Development, collaborate with campaign consultant to shape campaign strategy and achieve results.
Collaborate with a consulting grant writer to cultivate and solicit foundation funding.
Working with the volunteer Campaign Chair, recruit and manage campaign volunteers; schedule and support campaign leadership meetings. Develop the campaign fundraising plan and recommend revisions, as needed, to meet goals. Oversee campaign reporting and updates for board members and campaign volunteers.
Manage the capital campaign fundraising budget together with the Director of Development. Manage campaign record keeping; evaluate progress toward goals; prepare periodic reports on fundraising and present to the Board and Abbey leaders.
Work with the Communications Manager to oversee and produce campaign communications, events and retreats, creating content for the e-newsletter and integrating campaign milestones into ongoing public relations outreach.
Work with the Events Manager and Donor Relations Coordinator to design and manage campaign cultivation and donor recognition events and retreats.
Supervise the recording and acknowledgement of campaign gifts and pledges. Ensure exceptional donor acknowledgement, stewardship and public recognition, as appropriate.
Ensure coordination in the Development Department with other fundraising and communication activities.
Track the status of donor relationships and ensure follow-up on next steps with donors and prospects.
Work with colleagues to conduct prospect research and coordinate wealth screening.
Prepare gift proposals and other correspondence and materials to support cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of experience, training and education.
Five (5) years of professional experience in fundraising with a track record of success, and specific experience in capital campaigns. Candidates who can quantify their success, and characterize their fundraising results with performance numbers, will receive especially strong consideration.
Experience in scheduling and staffing solicitation calls and conducting prospect follow up and donor stewardship.
Experience in managing a capital campaign and budget.
Experience working with trustees and high-level volunteers in cultivating major gifts.
High level of organizational sophistication, non-profit business savvy and negotiation skills.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to persuade and excite philanthropic leaders, volunteers, colleagues and friends of the Abbey about its mission.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required; working knowledge of fundraising databases, preferably Raiser’s Edge.
Desire to learn quickly and work across a wide range of subject areas – from Benedictine spirituality to Catholic theology and liturgy; from building infrastructure to rare book collections and emerging trends in technology and learning.
Ability to handle confidential donor information with tact and discretion.
Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable, with a sense of humor.
Working knowledge of the Catholic Church; understanding of a Catholic Abbey and Seminary preferred.
Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Valid Oregon Driver’s License, proof of insurance and willingness to travel occasionally, especially throughout the Portland Metro area.
Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner which facilitates positive working relationships with customers, monks, co-workers and management.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
