Americans need a new economy that works for everyone, rather than an economy that makes a tiny minority fabulously wealthy and leaves millions in poverty or on the brink, particularly in communities of color. This economy is unsustainable – it’s deadly for people and the planet – but there is a way forward. We can reclaim the idea of the common good – that we can build a better future together – and move the narrative that democratic control of government and the economy is our best tool for investing in the common good.
The People’s Lobby has a vision of a new economy that serves people’s needs and a plan to win structural reforms that can make that new economy a reality. TPL and its close allies have built some key pieces of a movement for economic justice and the common good, including a network of more than 50 congregations and student organizations, the capacity to turn out 2,400 people to a public meeting, and a track record including policy changes from the local level to the national level and several recent people-powered electoral victories for progressive candidates.
To take the next step in building this movement, TPL is launching a street canvass to recruit dues-paying members. This canvass will not simply ask people to donate, but will ask them to join an organization and a movement with a number of longer-term opportunities for them to engage in the work. The Canvass Director will work closely with the National People’s Action Campaign canvass team to develop the right membership pitch for the People’s Lobby canvass. The Canvass Director will begin canvassing full-time with this rap until the canvass begins bringing in enough money to hire additional canvassers; at that point, the Canvass Director will hire and train additional canvassers.
