Sustainable America is seeking an energetic and highly motivated individual to be responsible for the development and oversight of national fundraising to include corporate, foundation, government, and especially individual giving.
This individual must have the interpersonal and communications skills necessary to capture and represent Sustainable America’s unique business model. This position will be an integral part of the leadership team, and help guide public awareness campaigns and investments in entrepreneurial efforts that will lend to the advancement of this young organization and make a difference in society.
Sustainable America is a non-profit organization focused on the twin issues of food and fuel in this country, and ways to make both systems more resilient and efficient. We seek to reduce food waste and expand food production, improve fuel efficiency and diversify our transportation fuels. Part of our mission is accomplished through campaigns to raise public awareness and change behavior. We also identify and support early-stage companies and entrepreneurs that are developing new technologies and methods to achieve our goals.
The Director of Development will develop and implement the fundraising strategy for Sustainable America. He or she will be responsible for achieving Sustainable America’s fundraising goals and stewardship of the organization. This includes leveraging key relationships and contacts within and outside of the Sustainable America network to ensure meeting revenue goals.
Primary responsibilities include:
Work with the Executive Director to develop strategies, products and initiatives for foundation and government support of our educational campaigns: I Turn It Off (www.iturnitoff.com), I Value Food (www.ivaluefood.com), and Shared Earth (www.sharedearth.com).
Work with the Executive Director to expand the number of high net worth donors to the Sustainable America Investor’s Club, which allows donors to participate in “impact philanthropy” by supporting early-stage companies.
Work with the Director of Programs to explore and implement creative opportunities to engage corporate sponsors and corporate foundations in our Fleetprint and We Value Food programs.
Work with the Director of Events to improve the success of several small fund raising events and one annual gala.
Serve as a member of the leadership team, providing input on and insight about key development strategies and events.
Demonstrated Competencies:
A thorough understanding of what constitutes a comprehensive and quality development program, especially for early stage non-profits.
A proven track record of prospecting and securing major and principal gifts, especially from high net worth individuals.
Understanding of funding landscape and relationships with national funders is required.
Strong organizational skills and a high degree of interpersonal skills.
Ability to think strategically and partner with key leadership.
Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and to initiate new ones.
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred.
Job Experience: Five or more years of experience in a position of similar responsibility.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Experienced with using Salesforce for non-profits.
Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) is a plus.
Knowledge of issues related to food and fuel is preferred.
Physical Requirements of Position: Ability to work occasional evenings and /or weekends as needed.
