Transgender Law Center’s Director of Finance and Operations will work at the heart of a movement of transgender and gender nonconforming people and allies working together to change laws, policies and attitudes to ensure that we can all live as our authentic selves. The Director of Finance and Operations oversees financial reporting functions including budget, financial statements, general ledger, receivables and payables, payroll, banking, and investments. The position also manages TLC’s administrative activities including human resources and benefits, oversees purchasing, and office operations. The Director of Finance and Operations will be supervised by the Executive Director, will supervise the Operations Manager and work closely with numerous vendors and consultants.
Responsibilities:
Fiscal Management
Supervise the preparation, execution, and monitoring of annual operating budget of over $2.1 million.
Oversee, create and manage processes to develop cash flow projections.
Prepare monthly financial statements for TLC’s Finance Committee.
Supervise preparation of all management reports and analyses.
Direct all accounting functions, authorizes and audits expenditures and accounting entries, and ensure proper internal financial controls.
Monitor TLC’s investment portfolio and cash flow, and manages relationships with service providers, consultants, managers, and bankers.
Develop business and contractual agreements between TLC and outside vendors and consultants.
Establish and monitor systems for managing contracts and grants, including invoicing and fiscal grant reporting.
Work with project staff to exercise strong fiscal management.
Support and develop relationships with outside fiscal experts (accounting firm, auditor).
Oversee preparation of IRS, state, and local taxes and reports.
Facilitate preparation of annual independent audit.
Human Resources
Oversee TLC’s administrative policies/procedures and human resource activities and practices.
Refine human resource systems, including recruitment, hiring, termination, and performance review processes.
Research labor laws and ensure TLC’s compliance.
Update employee and supervisor handbooks.
Ensure that all human resource-related matters are handled appropriately and in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations and laws.
Manage employee personnel files; and administer health and 403(b) benefits.
Operations Management
Oversee all information technology and office purchases, policies, contracts, and equipment.
Manage and negotiate the office lease.
Supervise the operations manager and IT consultants.
Risk Management
Ensure maintenance of TLC’s insurance policies at levels appropriate for the organization’s activities; oversee compliance with insurance requirements and documentation for vendors and funders; and implement best practice strategies to mitigate operational, reputational, financial, and other risk areas.
Consult with legal counsel, as needed, on a variety of organizational issues (e.g., labor, trademark, corporate governance, real estate.)
Other
Manage and/or execute special projects related to TLC’s mission as assigned.
Qualifications:
Minimum education or equivalent experience: Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related discipline. MBA/Accounting or CPA is an advantage.
Minimum experience: five to seven years of increasing responsibility in an organization, preferably a not-for-profit.
Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and Word.
Excellent writing skills.
Understanding of fund accounting and non-profit organizations’ financial planning concerns.
Experience with budget planning and development.
Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and peers.
Ability to work effectively with the entire Director team and ensure that directors understand their financial and budgetary responsibilities.
Human Resources experience in the areas of compensation, benefits, staffing, organizational development, and employee relations.
Practical knowledge of California employment law.
Experience working in deadline-driven environments, and proven ability to meet deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and with people from a variety of different racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual, gender, and generational backgrounds.
Comfortable operating in a fast paced and diverse community environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of transgender issues and/or experience working with the transgender community.
Demonstrated commitment to social justice, anti-oppression work, and LGBTQ rights.
