Director of Finance – Washington National Cathedral – Washington, DC

Job Summary:

Provide accurate and timely accounting, budgeting and financial reports and forecasting to Cathedral leadership and governing committees, promoting best practices in accordance with policies and procedures. Manage the institution’s general accounting records and operating of accounting systems, institutional budget process, and ensure appropriate and adequate internal controls to protect the integrity of financial resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Deliver timely and accurate accounting, budgeting and financial reports/statements to the Cathedral departments. Conduct research and prepare statistical analyses as requested. Determine correct accounting treatment of financial transactions in accordance with policy and generally accepted accounting procedures. Recommend solutions to complex accounting and budget problems.
Ensure the integrity of all general ledger account balances and the effective integration of subsidiary ledgers; determine the need for new accounts and manage requests for new accounts; manage revisions in account structures, new types of ledgers, revisions in the reporting system, changes in the use of accounts, and new account classifications or definitions.
Under the direction of the COO and in partnership with key constituents, develop and produce the Cathedral budget including operating, capital, and long-term budgets. Monitor budget results and report to COO, Dean.
Manage the institutional budgeting process, providing primary oversight of the detail upon approval:
Develop annual budget schedules and formats,
Coordinate departmental submissions into a consolidated budget and financial forecast,
Monitor budgets, review financial controls, prepare detailed reports, financial statements quarterly, monthly, or as information as requested,
Advise Dean, COO, and managers on how to mitigate risks and correct for imbalances in the budget projections.
Provide advice, assistance, and support to department managers and institutional leaders on the preparation and management of the budget and process.
Under the direction of the COO and Dean, monitor budgets to ensure consistency with and support of strategic priorities, providing consultation on performance. Perform regular evaluations of actual-to-budget among the various components during the budget cycle and recommend corrective action as appropriate.
Analyze the monthly financial statements and supporting data provided by the Foundation Finance and Accounting Department; prepare financial reports and present them to Cathedral leadership as requested.
Monitor the use of restricted funds, unrestricted funds, endowment, and operating funds to ensure the funds are allocated appropriately and within approved dollar limitations.
Review internal controls and evaluate effectiveness of established procedures; analyze risks and identify strategies to strengthen potential or actual weaknesses. Engage with Foundation Finance and Accounting Office to ensure alignment with policies and procedures, best practices, and internal controls.
Oversee grant management.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; CPA. Not-for-profit accounting and fund accounting experience required.
Ten+ years public and private accounting experience, preferably in a complex accounting environment.
3-5 years supervisory experience.
Demonstrated experience with accounting software, Great Plains preferred, report-writing software, and advanced knowledge of Excel required.

Knowledge of nonprofit accounting, generally accepted accounting principles, methods and applications.
Excellent communication skills; ability to communicate accounting information, policies, and/or procedures in a manner easily understood.
Strong analytical skills; ability to synthesize information, identify gaps and recommend solutions.
Demonstrated commitment to excellence in work product and service; ability to implement policies and procedures to maintain compliance with various regulations.
Ability to coach and develop staff.
Collaborative working style; ability to establish strong working relationships with peers as well as management.
High level of skill in relevant software systems; ability to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons and projections.
This position requires work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends.
