Director, Stewardship and Alumni Scholarships – California Alumni Association – Berkeley, CA

The Director of Stewardship and Alumni Scholarships will oversee the development and deployment of the Cal Alumni Association’s (CAA) fundraising and stewardship efforts which support the annual and endowment goals of CAA’s three scholarship programs. The Director will also provide leadership and supervision for CAA’s scholarship department staff. In partnership with the Director of Annual Giving, theDirector of Stewardship and Scholarships is responsible for designing, implementing and coordinating a comprehensive donor relations and stewardship system that appropriately and consistently promotes interaction with and recognition of scholarship donors at all levels. In addition, the position must sustain positive and mutually-rewarding relations between the University and its donors; partner with the CAA Development team to determine the best strategies for effective stewardship of donors; maintain ongoing and active networking with internal and external constituencies; and advise on recognition events and coordinate various activities for donor societies.

This position reports to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Steward and cultivate donors, volunteers and program advocates in support of the scholars.

Identify and qualify prospects, develop and implement cultivation and solicitation strategies, prepare briefing materials, and develop and implement action plans.

Met or exceed established net income targets and established fundraising goals.

Develop marketing strategies and implement marketing tactics designed to drive donations to CAA’s scholarship program.

Manage scholarship funds, match donors and recipients, project current and future awards and program expenditures, and oversee databases that support these functions.

Collaborate with Development and marketing staff to compose letters, compile appropriate invitation lists, engage featured program participants, create programs and provide program materials, prepare program scripts and participant remarks (as needed) and create and/or obtain donor awards and recognitions.

Provide guidance and leadership for scholarship stewardship events, ultimately produced by the CAA Events team.

Work collaboratively with University Relations and other campus units where appropriate to maximize the potential for the Association and our scholarship programs.

Manage and oversee a comprehensive donor acknowledgement and recognition program including oversight of information tracking processes regarding acknowledgement, recognition, on-going communications and continued cultivation of past and current major donors.

Develop and manage internal policies and procedures across the development department and coordinates with applicable University policies.

Design, document, and implement a systematic and integrated donor relations program that encompasses but is not limited to donor recognition events, endowed position installations, and building naming dedications.

Responsible for devising and using consistent, accurate, and appropriate information-sharing mechanisms for stewarding prospects and donors.

Support the stewardship responsibilities of other development staff by assisting them in establishing and coordinating individualized stewardship plans for donors to their programs.

Recommend and facilitate on- and off-campus publicity of major gifts and donors. Advise on and facilitate the recognition of donors in both print and Web-based publications. Contribute donor and gift information for the Association’s Annual Report, oversee production of the donor roll, determine the report recipients, and facilitate the mailing.

Serve as primary contact for the most significant donors, resolving or facilitating resolution of problems, questions, and concerns.

Team Leadership & Supervision

Partner with the Director of Annual Giving to provide leadership for CAA fundraising efforts.

Provide strategic leadership and supervision for the CAA scholarship team.

Provide leadership and supervision for the gift processing coordinator.

Provide leadership to departmental interns as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Extremely important to demonstrate the knowledge and ability to create, execute and/or support, and oversee a comprehensive donor acknowledgement and recognition plan, including advising on complex and orchestrated cultivation events and programs for the Association’s major donors.

Demonstrated ability to generate and implement strategic and creative solutions for stewarding donors.

Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a budget, and meet financial and net income targets.

Possess strong marketing and communications experience.

Excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential.

Excellent social and presentation skills, with large groups as well as with individuals, are required.

Proven skills and ability to manage multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including the ability to build consensus among team members and balance multiple concurrent priorities.

Possess the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Being detail oriented, well organized, focused and goal-oriented, with a high level of initiative and energy, is essential.

Adept at problem solving and using judgment in complex situations requiring independent initiative and tact.

A bachelor’s degree is required with a minimum of three to five years of leadership experience, preferably in higher education (or a comparably complex organization), in development, stewardship, advancement services and/or a related field.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with peers, external volunteers, vendors and donors. Previous experience interacting with donors is mandatory.

Previous experience in volunteer management, program administration, public relations and fiscal management.

Excellent analytical and computer skills using Microsoft office and Google applications; ability to use learn and complex databases and reporting functions.

Flexibility and adaptability in work schedule to permit evening and weekend commitments, along with occasional domestic US travel.

Must submit to and pass background check and FBI/DOJ fingerprint screening.

Must have valid CA driver’s license with acceptable driving record.

Familiarity with and connected within the Cal alumni community.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt position. Base pay range is between $80,000-85,000 annualized. CAA offers a competitive benefits package and positive work-life balanced environment.
