Financial Programs Associate (Internship) – Start Small Think Big Inc – Bronx, NY

Start Small Think Big (Start Small) is a not-for-profit organization located in the heart of the South Bronx, the poorest Congressional district in the country. Our mission is to help low- to moderate-income individuals build and sustain thriving businesses in order to increase their personal financial security and stimulate economic activity in underserved communities in New York City.

Start Small provides our clients with ongoing access to free small business legal assistance in order to ensure they develop a sound legal infrastructure for their businesses, helping them to manage the risks associated with starting a small business and providing them with a stable foundation upon which to grow.

Start Small also provides ongoing personal financial coaching as well as access to pro bono financial advisory and other specialized professional business services. Our financial program helps small business owners in two ways. First it ensures that participants have the capacity to use financial products, establish and maintain financial plans and financial management skills, work toward achieving financial goals, and develop strategies for preserving their financial position during times of both economic prosperity and instability. Secondly, it ensures that participants’ self-employment activities over the long term ultimately lead to an increase in wealth (income and assets).

Job Responsibilitiesshall include, but are not limited to:

Assist with the development of resource guides, intake forms, templates, and other materials to further develop and enhance the Small Business Financial Program
Assist with the planning and coordination of workshops on topics including small business financial management, bookkeeping and small business financing
Participate in client intake interviews and draft client memorandums to be provided to financial services volunteers that summarize relevant information about each client and his or her business financial needs
Assist with the coordination of client meetings and collection and analysis of financial information

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

Current graduate student focused on Finance and/or Accounting (e.g. MBA, Masters in Accounting) preferred; Undergraduate with relevant business coursework and experience will also be considered
High level of computer proficiency including familiarity with MS Office, especially Excel. Quickbooks experience is preferred
Demonstrated interest in the intersection of business, access to capital, and community economic development
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; ability to communicate with diverse groups, including Start Small’s clients, corporate financial services volunteers, and other external constituencies
Highly organized, creative and self-motivated; a strong problem-solver and analytical/critical thinker
