KIPP Bay Area Schools ranks in the top ten percent of all public school districts in California. KIPP Bay Area Schools is in the midst of an ambitious growth plan to more than quadruple the number of students served by 2020, and significantly increase the number of low-income students from the communities we serve who graduate from college.
KIPP (The Knowledge is Power Program) began in 1994 in Houston, Texas. Today, there are 183 KIPP schools in 20 states and Washington, D.C. serving 70,000 students. KIPP Bay Area Schools serves nearly 4,000 students, has over 350 employees, and operates with an annual budget exceeding $45M.
Position Overview
The Financial Reporting Associate is a key member of the KIPP team and reports to the Assistant Director of Finance. S/he will lead the preparation of financial reporting on behalf of our schools and regional office for key stakeholders, including our principals, senior leaders, board of directors, auditors, districts, state and federal agencies, creditors, and donors. Additionally, s/he will work with the finance team to build a scalable and efficient financial reporting infrastructure, undertake ambitious opportunities for growth, provide exceptional service and support to our schools, and ensure their continued financial success.
The ideal candidate for this position will be eager to build a strong knowledge base in charter school finance and has the ability to learn quickly and problem solve. S/he must enjoy using technical skills (mostly in Excel) and strategic thinking to design and improve our systems. S/he must be comfortable asking questions while striving for independence. The Financial Reporting Associate will be based out of our Regional Support Office (RSO) in downtown Oakland (BART accessible). This position is available immediately.
Roles and Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Financial Reporting
Lead accurate and timely reporting of quarterly financial statements for our district authorizers and financial updates for our Board of Directors and creditors
Collaborate with the fundraising team in creating grant budgets for donors that illustrate KIPP’s innovative approach
Become an expert in reporting capabilities of our accounting software (MIP) and redesign budget-to-actual financial reports for budget managers and school leaders, possibly incorporating data visualizations
Train school operations managers and principals to use budget-to-actual financial reports. Provide ongoing support to ensure effective spending. For example, specific questions include “I’m going over budget on uniforms this year. Which of our middle schools spend less dollars per pupil?”
Fiscal Compliance
Become a subject matter expert on federal and state fiscal compliance. Proactively anticipate risks; recommend and implement solutions
Prepare periodic reports demonstrating the use of federal, state, and local funds; organize documentation as needed, which includes collaborating with accounting and HR teams to compile payroll history, invoices, and credentials
Complete in-depth review of audited financial statements and form 990
Document methods and assumptions to ensure work product is replicable and defensible; proactively improve our methodology and efficiency across financial reporting
Financial Modeling and Analysis
Utilize advanced excel tools to transfer financial data to/from our financial model and accounting system. Research and implement next generation systems to ensure seamless integration
Partner with finance teammates to update financial modeling: examples include updating state funding, benefits forecasting, and school spending based on new assumptions
Create and maintain financial and accounting dashboards for the leadership team
Opportunities for Growth
Serve as a hands-on financial advisor to regional leaders on spending decisions
Support in the preparation, execution, and follow-up for quarterly meetings to advise school leaders on financial decisions
Research and implement reporting capabilities and infrastructure necessary to secure facilities financing and provide periodic reporting to related stakeholders
Research and implement next generation scalable financial reporting as we continue to execute our growth plan. Address the question, “What tools and reports should our leadership and school leaders have at their fingertips to ensure efficient use of resources leading to great outcomes for our students?”
Present year-to-date organizational financial updates at the Board’s Finance Committee meetings

Bachelor’s degree
Detail oriented team player who is dedicated to getting the job done accurately and efficiently
Growth mindset
Demonstrated experience in a finance, accounting, or audit role a plus
Experience with charter school finance, or state and federal fiscal compliance a plus
Strong understanding of and ability to create financial statements, including interaction of balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement a plus
Advanced Excel skills; knowledge of Tableau a plus
