Two sister NGOs: ‘Harlem Children Society’ (HCS) and ‘Association of Science & Society’ (AS&S), aimed at developing a society for better humanity by creating awareness in scientific literacy and social issues are looking for committed and efficient Fundraiser and Proposal writers.

Harlem Children Society (URL: www.HCS2k.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting an Innovative Science Education Program for Children and Youth living in under-resourced and under-served communities and school districts. We seek to engage learners in a healthy enquiry of the world, and to expose them to opportunities that are available in the field of science. We seek to emphasize their pursuit of higher education and career achievement by providing them with knowledge, skills, guidance, encouragement, and understanding.

Harlem Children Society (HCS) is a Fifteen Year (15) old “bridge program” that provides an opportunity for extremely high level of scientific research at leading scientific and medical institutions for select high school (Grades 8-12) and Under-Graduate students from low-income areas in New York City, the Tristate area, across the country nationally, and a Global program in several countries in all continents. Students are paired with mentors, who are top professionals in their field, and train and work on specific projects.

Job Summary

The program identifies under-resourced and under-served communities, targets at-risk children and youth in those communities, and provides them an opportunity to explore the world and their future through science, thereby helping to revitalize the community as a whole. The organizations also serve to be a catalyst for change through recognizing inventors and invention, promoting creativity, and advancing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. We are committed to fostering the inventive spirit, developing creative products, programs, and partnerships that emphasize the importance of invention in society.

Responsibilities

Write, review, preparing and edit proposals and letters of intent for corporations, foundations and government agencies following funding guidelines, parameters and procedures.
Research potential funding sources: foundation, government, and corporate foundation funding prospects for programs including children’s education programming, inventor recognition programs, and general operational support through a variety of printed and electronic sources to match funding focus with HCS projects.
Research and compile pertinent institutional information for projects requiring funding. This includes meeting with or contacting various departments within HCS to garner information to be incorporated into case statements, letters of intent, proposals, and reports.
Develop case statements, letters of intent, and other related materials. Prioritize projects and keep multiple projects moving in a timely manner, meeting deadlines and managing supplemental data/material required for proposals.
Prepare compliance reports and monitor tracking system to ensure reporting requirements are met. Maintain Grant and Funder files.
Acting as liaison between funders and the organization.
Provide writing support for major donor and individual contribution letters and acknowledgments required by executive leadership.
Prepare brochure and annual report copy, working closely with Research and Evaluation staff.
Research and compile giving history and relevant information for prospective foundations/donor/prospects.
Draft and complete corporate and foundation correspondence or other information associated with office as required. Will have contact with donors and prospective corporate and foundation funders.
Working with internal departments to write grant narratives, website information and research program data
Organize and maintain electronic and hard copy files.
Traveling if necessary to represent the organizations at meetings and conferences Communicating with funders.
Working with the Director of Development to construct and implement a plan for fundraising
Assist with donor cultivation and fundraising events.
A 3D Animation Film addressing Climate Change & Civilizations: Assistance required to funding and promotion of the film. The film provides solutions that creates awareness in Eco-Responsibility and Eco-friendly initiatives, and would empower the next generation to participate in finding solutions.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of three years fundraising experience.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience and ability to research projects through a variety of means.
Knowledge and experience of fundraising and development functions.
Experience with Raiser’s Edge.
Proven research capabilities, grant-writing experience with focus on support from corporations and foundations.
Computer literacy and data base familiarity.
Understanding of corporate and foundation grant making process.
Ability to work well with diverse groups including internal and external audiences.
Ability to work effectively under pressure responding to changing priorities, prioritize projects, while adhering to deadlines.
Ability to seek and synthesize information and communicate in a compelling and succinct form.
Solid understanding of budgets as they relate to proposals/grants.
Disciplined self-starter who can set and achieve goals.
