Major Gifts Officer – SF Marin Food Bank – San Francisco, CA

PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Major Gifts Officer plays a critical role in developing and managing all fundraising activity for individuals contributing at least $1,000 annually, with a focus on building relationships with individuals capable of making gifts of $5,000 or more to the San Francisco and Marin Food Banks. This role is one of two Major Gifts Officer positions on the Major Gifts team. The team is supervised by the Associate Director, Leadership Gifts and supported by the Development Manager. The Major Gifts Officer is based in the Food Bank’s San Francisco office, and will travel in Marin and San Francisco counties with a special focus on cultivating and expanding the Food Bank’s major donor base in both regions.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree required, plus 3-5 years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Proven ability to close gifts at the five and six-figure level. Should have a high degree of computer literacy. Working knowledge of The Raiser’s Edge is a plus. Familiarity with the Food Bank and the San Francisco Bay Area funding community is highly desirable. Must be able to complete projects as a flexible team player in a collaborative work environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Solicit annual and incremental gifts from a portfolio of approximately 125-150 major donors and prospects, both independently and working collaboratively with other staff and volunteers.

2) Identify new prospects among existing donors and outside of the Food Bank.

3) Develop and implement strategies for the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual major donors and prospects.

4) Build, maintain and maximize relationships with major gift donors and prospects, deepening their engagement with the Food Bank.

5) Schedule, manage, and regularly attend donor meetings and host private tours of Food Bank facilities individually and in partnership with other staff.

6) Develop annual plan for donor portfolio and assignments. Monitor annual plan results and modify as necessary.

7) Develop expert familiarity with programmatic offerings; maintain current knowledge of key developments in Food Bank programming and advocacy efforts as they occur. Maintain working knowledge of programmatic priorities and funding opportunities for donors.

8) Engage Food Bank Board members in fundraising efforts, working with Executive Director, Director of Development, Associate Direct of Leadership Gifts, and appropriate Program staff.

9) Help plan and staff development events as appropriate.

10) Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

1) Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree a plus.

2) Three to five years demonstrated successful experience and effectiveness in major gifts fundraising with a focus on prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation of large gifts.

3) Strong initiative and self-motivation, and interest in working as part of a collaborative team.

4) Outstanding interpersonal skills; excellent research skills; superior written and oral communication skills; and relevant computer skills.

5) Experience working with volunteers, Board members, and professional Program staff.

6) Flexibility regarding schedule and willingness to travel locally approximately two days a week

7) Demonstrated ability to coordinate portfolio management with additional team projects.

8) Understanding and appreciation for the Food Bank’s mission and the ability to articulate the unique aims and values of the organization to major donors and prospects.
