Operations and Development Director – Archipelago Books – Brooklyn, NY

Archipelago Books, a nonprofit publishing house devoted to international literature, is in an exciting phase of organizational growth and expansion. As we enter our second decade of life, we are now creating a third full-time position. The Operations and Development Director will work strategically in fiscal management, development (grant-writing, fundraising), production and office management (including managing our subscription program, working closely with our web designer and interns, and serving as a liaison with our book designer), and marketing (working closely with our distributors, booksellers, the academic market, special markets). S/he will collaborate with Jill Schoolman (Publisher) and Kendall Storey (Associate Editor & Director of Publicity) to support Archipelago’s mission to publish outstanding works of international literature.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Oversee general accounting records, monthly reporting on expenses and revenue (using Quick Books), royalties, end-of-the-year audit (990 and Char 500 filings working with an outside contracted CPA firm), production budgets
Prepare monthly financial reports
Create and carry out strategic plan for development (seeking funding from national government grants, private and international foundations, individual donor campaigns, and fundraising events)
General office management (ordering and maintaining supplies, overseeing various intern projects, organizing directoutreach)
Manage subscription program

Qualifications

Minimum of a B.A.

At least 2 years of work experience in a nonprofit organization, business management, development and/or marketing (publishing or other)

A strong reader with excellent communication skills (both written and oral)

A successful track record in setting priorities and multi-tasking; keen analytic, organizational, and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision-making

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with a strong ability to work harmoniously with others

A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment
