Summary of Responsibilities:
The Senior Accountant has direct responsibility for organizational accounting activities including accounts payable/receivable, bank and all other account reconciliations, cash flow and handling, financial reporting, grant accounting, and maintenance of a computerized accounting system for all Ecology Center accounts.
Primary Responsibilities:
Provides overall fiscal management services to the organization, including monitoring of cash flow, timely payment of bills, accurate maintenance of bank records and consistent, timely reconciliation of bank statements; oversees all monies received from initial collection to preparation of bank deposits and transport to bank.
Maintains a computerized, departmentalized general ledger and subsidiary journals in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles; prepares journal transactions, resolves errors and initiates corrective action; routinely prepares and reviews financial documents for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with established policies and procedures.
Prepares required schedules, reports and analyses for the fiscal year-end audit; responds to inquiries from and works directly with auditors in the compilation of accounting records and schedules for completion of the annual tax returns, performance of annual audit, review of grant contracts and accounting records, and other financial audits as required.
Supervises one accounting assistant in accounts payable processes, bank reconciliation, and preparation of bank deposits.
Completes quarterly and annual sales tax and other required reports with accuracy and by deadlines.
Assists in preparation of monthly financial reports and accompanying schedules and worksheets, including budget-to-actual variance reports, providing follow-up and documentation for significant variances. Investigates unusual transactions and fluctuations and takes corrective action as needed.
Manages all grant accounting including invoicing, financial reporting, and maintenance of grant records in compliance with contract and audit requirements.
Assists as necessary in the research and compilation of data to prepare annual budget.
Recommends and implements financial strategies, procedures, objectives and policies that will improve Accounting operations and works proactively across functional lines with managers and staff to provide guidance and assistance and effect financial process improvement.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
3 years or more of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit environment
Must possess a current CA driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:
Detailed and current knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Practices.
Working knowledge of non-profit accounting.
Strong background in business management practices and principles.
Experience in grant management
Working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to financial accounting and management.
Strong proficiency in use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and professional grade accounting software with fund accounting; advanced Excel skills preferred.
Hours
40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, flexible between hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.; some telework possible
Wage
Salary dependent on qualifications; this is a benefitted position with full medical and dental coverage, 401K plan, sick/vacation/holiday pay, EAP
