ABOUT UNIFI SCHOLARS

UniFi Scholars is a new New York City- based not-for-profit that provides financial literacy and college readiness education to low-income, high-achieving public high school students. The program seeks to bridge the socioeconomic divide in the college application process and unify students of high academic standing around both their shared standard of achievement and a lifelong proficiency in financial literacy. UniFi Scholars envisions a future in which academic standing — rather than inherited financial standing –- dictates the make-up of elite college campuses and in which all Americans are unified by a common ability to responsibly manage their finances.

UNIFI SCHOLARS SUMMER PILOT PROGRAM

UniFi Scholars will work with Sports & Arts in the Schools Foundation (SASF) — the largest provider of school-based after-school programs in New York City — to deliver the program during Summer 2015. Students will be standouts in the classroom, nominated for the program by SASF site directors. During the program, these students will be both employed as interns with SASF and banked, thus making the understanding of certain concepts, such as direct deposit, more concrete.

UniFi Scholars’ curriculum, which will cover topics ranging from personal money management to the basics of banking and credit, will be largely experiential in nature – with a variety of activities aimed at budgeting, saving, and long-term planning — to ingrain prudent financial habits. As such, a significant focus of the program will be on student loans and financial aid resources, as these will be immediately relevant to our students as they apply to college. The program will culminate with the students’ successful development of a long-term budget – forecasting their savings and expenditures over a 10-year period.

Throughout the course of the pilot program students will hear from college admissions officers, college financial aid officers, and young professional across industries in order to better understand both the college application process and potential career opportunities.
