The mission of Techbridge, an award-winning nonprofit with a proven, data-driven model, is to empower girls to realize their dreams through science, technology, and engineering. Our innovative after-school and summer programs inspire 5th through 12th grade girls from low-income communities to change the world, providing girls with hands-on projects and career exploration through our curriculum, role models, and field trips. Techbridge girls build confidence, problem-solving skills, perseverance, and public speaking abilities that will serve them well in their careers. Building on 15 years of experience, Techbridge after-school programs have served over 5,000 girls across seven school districts. Techbridge’s holistic approach gives girls a strong support network that includes their peers, teachers, families, and role models. Through its national professional development efforts and partnerships, Techbridge has reached over 15,000 adults through trainings and resources for role models, educators, and families.
Techbridge is now expanding nationally to bring its award-winning programs to more girls in more cities including Seattle and Washington DC, and scaling impact through innovative collaborations with national youth-serving groups like Girl Scouts, YMCA, and Society of Women Engineers. Founded in 2000 as a program of Chabot Space & Science Center, Techbridge spun off as an independent 501(c)(3) in 2011. Position Summary:
This position is responsible for all ongoing accounting tasks, working under the supervision of the Director of Finance and Operations. The Staff Accountant must perform the duties on time and with precision, yet keep an eye to the whole of the accounting system, maintaining proper documentation for all financial activity and insuring consistency and clarity of systems. The Staff Accountant coordinates finance related work with staff, assists the Director of Finance and Operations, and communicates with other staff and outside entities regarding accounting matters where appropriate.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Day-to-Day Tasks
• Runs accounts payable, including staff credit card purchases.
• Runs accounts receivable, generates invoices, records bank deposits.
• Assigns accounting codes and allocate expenses to departments and funders.
• Manages semi-monthly payroll, ensures payroll accuracy, assists with the administration of 403b, and workers comp. Works with outside payroll service on an ongoing basis.
• Limited human resources duties, including calculating and tracking accrued benefits.
• Assists the Director of Finance and Operations with managing bank balances and cash flow.
• Responsible for filing and keeping filing systems organized and updated.
• Conducts accounting procedures orientation for all new employees.
2. Monthly Tasks
• Collaborates with the Director of Finance and Operations to do month-end closings including, but not limited to entering accrued PTO, shared cost allocations and releases of restricted revenue.
• Tracks Temporarily Restricted and Unrestricted Net Assets.
• Coordinates period-end financial activity by staff, including submittal of staff petty cash, credit card records and expense reports.
• Collaborates with Development department to reconcile their donations records against accounting records, on a monthly basis (Salesforce-Quickbooks Reconciliation).
• Responsible for posting month-end journal entries to the general ledger.
• Maintains fixed assets and depreciation schedule when applicable.
• Prepares monthly organizational financial reports, including dashboard and reports for the Board of Directors.
3. Yearly Tasks
• Assists in preparation of all fiscal and calendar year-end closings.
• Assists in preparation of all required filings including Form 990.
• Assists with annual budget and budget re-forecast process.
• Assists with annual fiscal audits by an outside auditor.
• Assists Director of Finance and Operations with creation and implementation of financial policies, practices and forms when requested, including, when time allows, research regarding best practices and regulations.
• Issues or oversees annual 1099 forms and oversees the issuing annual W-2 forms by outside payroll service.
Other Duties
• Works pro-actively and collaboratively as a member of the staff team to support and strengthen the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the organization.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Minimum of three years of bookkeeping experience and basic knowledge of GAAP; nonprofit accounting experience, especially grant accounting experience, preferred.
• Proficiency with QuickBooks preferred.
• Strong Excel/spreadsheet skills; enthusiasm for learning more about Excel and other tools that come along.
• Experience with databases a plus, such as Salesforce.
• Excellent problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Highly organized and systematic, with excellent time and project management skills and the ability to juggle competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Punctual, reliable, consistent with strong attention to detail, high level of accuracy.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills; courteous, direct and accountable.
• Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.
• Strong commitment to Techbridge’s mission, resourceful, driven, creative and flexible.
• Readiness to troubleshoot and problem solve; willingness to pitch in wherever asked.
• Ability to hold confidentiality, good judgment, aware of other people’s needs.
• Works effectively both independently and in concert with supervisor and other staff.
