The Director of Development – Houston Humane Society – Houston, TX

The Director of Development will serve as senior administrative officer responsible for planning, implementation, management, and oversight of all development and marketing activities including fundraising and donor relations, capital campaign, annual campaign, major gifts, endowment, and supervision of development staff. This individual reports to the Executive Director, and works collaboratively with Houston Humane Society board, staff, administration, volunteers, and prospective donors The Director’s primary areas of focus are the cultivation of major donor gifts and development of $20-25 million capital campaign. He or she will build innovative fundraising and marketing approaches that reflect Houston Humane Society’s culture, identity and personality. The Director will oversee the business operations of the department, including developing and administering operating and capital budgets in the areas of fundraising, communications, and marketing donor/funder research and relationship management, board and designated committee communications, database maintenance, direct mail, events, public relations, communications/marketing, and campaign design and implementation. He or she will participate in these activities along with overseeing and managing staff that will initially consist of: Administrative Assistant and Volunteer Coordinator, Annual Giving and Foundation Grants Manager, Public Relations and Special Events Manager.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business management, public relations or related field required. No less than 5 years of fundraising experience. Non-profit experience is preferred. Creative, enthusiastic and outgoing professional who enjoys interacting with donors, senior administrators, and community leaders. Ability to manage difficult or complex situations and/or people with tact, confidence and diplomacy. Ability to travel to meet with donors and prospective donors throughout Houston and to travel throughout the region for occasional needs. Excellent writing and computer skills needed. Proficient in all Microsoft Office programs Effective oral and written communication skills. Strong organizational skills and detail focused. Self starter who can work independently as well as with a team and can operate in a changing environment, following timelines and meeting deadlines. Ability to attend evening and weekend donor functions. Demonstrated success in closing five-, six- and seven- figure gifts.
