Associate Managing Editor – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – New York, NY

Over the decades, NRDC litigation to ensure compliance with environmental laws and the organization’s coalition-building and advocacy has played a major role in protecting environmental health, natural resources and the quality of life for residents in communities around the nation and beyond. Today, our staff work out of offices in New York;, Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Bozeman (MO); and Beijing.

The NRDC Communications Department seeks a skilled associate managing editor to organize and maintain workflow across multiple digital platforms and help oversee a writing pool of editorial freelancers. The AME will share responsibility for trafficking and editing NRDC editorial content and for recruiting and assigning writers to a variety of projects for NRDC program staff, such as drafting speeches, columns, op-eds, social media messaging, and other B-to-B and B-to-C content. The AME will also be responsible for copy editing and overseeing fact checking of graphics, video scripts, social media messaging, and a wide range of other editorial content.

This is a full-time position with benefits based in NRDC’s New York headquarters, although candidates may be able to work remotely at least some days per week if preferred.

Responsibilities:

Tracking and managing schedules and deadlines to ensure efficient content flow through the editorial process.
Receiving, assigning, and tracking editorial changes.
Communicating changes and liaising with departments (edit, art, photo, production, media, programs, etc.) as needed.
Prioritizing assignments for staff and freelance writers.
Assigning work and keeping projects on deadline.
Reading, copyediting, and cleaning up copy after each editorial step.
Coordinating freelance fact checkers and copyeditors.
Stepping in for managing editor to fulfill duties as necessary.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Skills:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communication, or English preferred.
3+ years of relevant editorial/managing experience at a publication, print or online.
Strong writing, editing, grammar, spelling, and communication skills.
Understanding of the writing and editorial process.
Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in your work.
Working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style.
Excellent project management skills.
Flexibility to find quick solutions and problem-solve.
Self-motivated and possessing the ability to meet aggressive production deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work efficiently and independently as well as collaborate freely with coworkers.
Ability to multitask, prioritize workload, and follow up independently to meet deadlines
Working knowledge of InCopy and InDesign. Photoshop a plus.
