Development & Academic Marketing Assistant – New York – The New Press

Job description
The New Press, an award-winning, nonprofit book publisher located in NYC seeks a Development & Academic Marketing Assistant who will report jointly to the Development Director and the Director of Sales and Subsidiary Rights. This full-time position supports both departments on a range of fronts.

Candidates should also have an interest in and commitment to the ideals and mission of The New Press.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Development Activities (60%)

Under the direction of the Director of Development:
Assist with individual donors, including prospecting; maintaining individual files; and outreach support.
Maintain up-to-date contact records (in Excel, FileMaker, and CiviCRM, once launched)
Assist with organizing and managing fundraising events, particularly the annual cocktail benefit: coordinate invitations; maintain event lists; manage catering and rentals; and provide follow-up correspondence
Manage donation process (e.g., recording & acknowledging gifts; liaising with Finance department; drafting tax receipts)
Assist Manager of Foundation Relations with foundation projects as needed
Help draft and review development communications materials including presentations, briefing packets, and letters of inquiry
Perform general administrative duties for Development department, including meeting minutes, general correspondence, filing, mailings, and scheduling meetings
Provide Executive Director support: phone coverage, calendar, and other duties as needed

Academic Marketing Activities (40%)
Under the direction of the Director of Sales and Subsidiary Rights:

Implement email-based direct marketing activities for front- and back-list titles
Oversee, fulfill, and collect payment on all desk and examination copy requests that come in to The New Press
Conduct data analysis related to course adoptions
Coordinate and maintain New Press presence, schedule, and ad deadlines for conferences (i.e., academic, professional, not-for-profit as well as lower education), through TNP distributor and direct placement
Participate in outlining and implementing author conference attendance
Prepare academic marketing materials including ads, flyers, sell sheets, and postcards
Provide detailed, analytical reports on academic marketing activities
Train and manage the Academic Marketing and Development intern as s/he works on various tasks, especially: desk and exam copies, office book order, book mailings, and research projects
Be a vibrant member of the sales, publicity, and marketing teams
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Highly organized and detail-oriented
Ability to function both independently and as an active team member, be proactive and take initiative, and meet deadlines
Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion
Excellent oral, writing, editing, and problem-solving skills, with ability to motivate and inspire through the written word, and to think creatively and analytically
Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office
The following qualifications are preferred:

Familiarity with databases, donor management software, PubTrack, and InDesign
Experience with event planning
Ability to create collateral materials (e.g., invitations, flyers, and e-newsletters) for both departments using InDesign, Photoshop and/or Illustrator
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree, with some experience in an office environment through internships or full-time positions, preferably in a development/fundraising capacity.
