Scope of Position

A Family For Every Child seeks to hire a dynamic and experienced Development Director to lead its fundraising program, including foundation, corporate and individual giving, major donor cultivation, annual giving, and special events. Ideal candidates will be accomplished fundraising professionals who work well in a team environment with both staff and volunteers, and have a passion for improving outcomes for youth.

The successful candidate will work in partnership with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic fundraising plan for the organization, and will play a key role in the leadership of A Family For Every Child. A vital component of this position is to enhance the major donor and annual giving programs for the organization. Major gifts, major donors/investors and annual givers are defined here:

Those who are already donating a minimum of $5,000 per year;
Giving on an annual basis for several past years with the potential of becoming larger donors;
Smaller donors who have the potential to meet or exceed the $5,000-per-year level;
Those we identify in the community as having the potential to be annual and/or major donors.

Duties

Lead and manage overall development efforts to raise funds;
Develop comprehensive, proactive strategies for maximizing giving among existing and prospective major donors and annual givers;
Create a comprehensive donor cultivation plan, (i.e., pre-contact, numbers of contacts, types of contacts, asks, recognition after donations, and retention of donors);
Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential corporate sponsors and individual donors;
Develop and grow the organization’s individual donor base, employing both online and offline strategies;
Manage donor recognition program;
Guide the Development Team to convert existing event sponsors and similar into major donors;
In cooperation with the Executive Director and Board, develop personal solicitations and written proposals to individuals, foundations and corporations to meet the annual fundraising goal;
Assist with foundation research;
Oversee signature special events;
Maintain high quality information on donors, prospects and volunteers in the donor database;
Provide regular reports on giving programs to the Executive Director, Development Team and Board
Oversee the creation and distribution of the organization’s Annual Report;
Ensure organization follows nonprofit fundraising best practices, and is positioned for strong recognition on ratings sites such as Guidestar and Charity Navigator;
Hire, train, and manage related development and event staff, consultants, volunteers, and interns;
Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Min. bachelor’s degree with emphasis on non-profit management, human services, business, or related field is required.
Master’s degree, CFRE preferred
At least five years of experience developing major donors and annual giving programs, or related field
Successful track record in securing major and annual gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations is required. Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered as qualifying.
Experience with donor cultivation and management software, such as Salesforce
Extensive knowledge of local, regional, and national philanthropic communities
Possess excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to represent the agency with knowledge and respect

Ability to adhere to policies and procedures as outlined in organization’s manuals
Demonstrated success in working as a member of a team and developing effective working relationships with staff, volunteers and donors
Deep appreciation for and commitment to A Family For Every Child’s mission of finding permanent adoptive homes for every child in foster care

Supervision
Reports to and works under the general supervision of the Executive Director. The supervisor advises on resource development strategies. This position works independently to achieve funding priorities and has considerable discretion in applying rules and regulations. Performance is reviewed by results obtained and the level of satisfaction of staff and community members who work in development. This position may lead the work of consultants, hourly employees and interns, as appropriate. Additionally, this position must collaborate with event and other development staff to achieve mutual goals.
