Director of Development / Communications – SMART – San Francisco, CA

Position Summary: SMART is seeking an energetic and motivated Director of Development and Communications who will support the Executive Director in design, implementation, and management of all fundraising and communication efforts in order to maintain diversified funding streams, facilitate financial growth and engage community supporters to secure a growing budget of over a million dollars in contributed income per year.

An ideal candidate exhibits strong passion for SMART’s mission, strong written and oral communication skills, strong relationship building skills, and a track record of fundraising success. We are seeking a strategic thinker with an ability to clearly and articulately describe SMART’s work, and the confidence to make a compelling ask. S/he will report to the Executive Director, will directly supervise our Development and Communications Associate, and will be supported by our Volunteer and Corporate Engagement Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Fundraising Direct all fundraising efforts, including: • Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement the program’s annual development plan • Regularly conduct prospect research and identify new funding opportunities • Communicate and manage relationships with existing and new individual and organizational funders • Develop grant proposals and final reports • Manage donor database and track communications • Oversee development calendar, including measuring the organization’s progress against our development plan and insuring the timely notification and collection of outstanding pledges

Supervision

• Manage hiring, check-ins, and annual reviews of Development and Communications Associate • Collaborate with program team to streamline information sharing and deliver prompt and accurate content for funders and other external audiences

Board Relations • Correspond directly with Board to discuss donor cultivation and solicitation • Work with the Board and Development Committee to initiate and develop fundraising strategies • Update Board on development activities

Communications and Marketing • In conjunction with SMART staff, develop and implement communication strategies to bring more awareness of the program’s mission and results to our various constituencies (Students, Families, Partner Middle Schools, High Schools, Media and Donors) • Create visually consistent and professional materials (website, Annual Report, promotional materials, etc.) • Represent SMART within professional circles and serve as a communications liaison • Develop and collect content for student updates, program enhancements and organizational news for distribution to SMART’s community

Event Planning • Manage all aspects of fundraising events in conjunction with SMART staff, Board of Directors, and Event Chairs

Data Tracking & Reporting

• Manage donor database and donor records • Coordinate with Program Team to set metrics and guide the collection of data to present to funders • Report monthly projections to Executive Director and provide quarterly reports for the Board

Required Qualifications • Strong passion for SMART mission • Bachelor’s degree • Excellent writing skills • At least two-year commitment required • At least five years of experience in communications, development, and/or research-related activities • Preferred experience in grant proposal writing and proven record of success • Event planning experience • Excellent research, graphic, editing, multi-tasking and organizational skills • Excellent time-management skills • Ability to work effectively and creatively both in a collaborative team and independent setting, as well as with diverse external populations (under-served youth and families, donors, foundations) • Proficient in basic office and design software, including word processing, spreadsheet, photo editing, and data management • Strategic and deliberate thinker
