This position is based in our international headquarters, located in Westlake Village, California. As part of HOBY’s strategic plan being implemented in advance of HOBY’s 60th Anniversary in 2018, the Board of Trustees has created an Advancement Department to be led by the Chief Advancement Officer (who reports to HOBY’s CEO) to further HOBY’s mission through “ownership” of alumni and volunteer relations, development, and marketing and communications. HOBY’s programming and administration functions report through separate teams to HOBY’s CEO. We are seeking creative, ambitious professionals for our advancement team who are committed to delivering exceptional results to help HOBY grow and thrive.

Director of Development

With the support of the CEO and an engaged, mission driven Board of Trustees, the Advancement team is responsible for creating new sustainable relationships and deepening existing relationships with private and public companies, foundations and institutions as well as fostering long-term sustainable connections and relationships with HOBY’s alumni and volunteers. By effectively advocating HOBY’s mission and fostering lasting relationships with our diverse portfolio of constituents, the Advancement team has primary responsibility for ensuring our financial strength and sustainability. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer, the Director of Development will lead all fundraising activities for the organization, including individual and corporate donor giving, annual fundraising dinners and special events, corporate partnerships and foundation grants. Working with the CEO, Chief Advancement Officer and HOBY’s professional staff, the Director of Development will be responsible for generating net revenues in excess of $1 million+ on an annual basis although HOBY’s Advancement Department plan phases in revenue expectations over a three year period as the advancement team is built out and gains traction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS—

Build and manage major gifts program, including prospect/donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship in partnership with CEO and Chief Advancement Officer. Ensure all next steps, pledges and recommended actions are recorded in DonorPerfect and followed up appropriately;
Direct individual donor activities, including but not limited to direct appeals, monthly giving club (to be developed), peer-to-peer fundraising opportunities and more;
Manage and execute all aspects of HOBY fundraising events, including Albert Schweitzer annual galas in New York City and Los Angeles, a new annual cultivation event in connection with HOBY’s World Leadership Congress and other events as appropriate. Includes committee management, sponsor and individual solicitation in coordination with CEO, Board members and other Advancement department colleagues as appropriate, logistical planning and vendor relationships, revenue/expense tracking, coordination with VP of Advancement and Director of Alumni and Volunteer Relations on follow-up and acknowledgement after event, coordination with Director of Marketing and Communications on event marketing, etc.;
Identify corporate partner prospects, conduct outreach and build relationships with contacts involved with philanthropic giving, employee volunteerism, in-kind donations and other strategic support for causes;
Develop, execute and steward customized, multi-faceted and long-term corporate partnerships that deliver meaningful value to both HOBY and corporations;
Target foundation prospects, develop powerful and effective grant proposals and letters of inquiry, and cultivate long-term relationships with foundation officers;
Manage existing foundation relationships and grants by preparing reports, re-applying for new funding, and meeting with foundation officers to identify opportunities;
Maintain budget for all development activities;
Provide guidance to HOBY affiliates on fundraising efforts;
With support from Development Coordinator, maintain donor and prospect records in DonorPerfect.

Competency or position requirements—

5 years of development experience, with exposure to a wide range of fundraising tactics and direct involvement in major gifts and special events;A Bachelor’s degree or relevant work experience required, Master’s degree preferred;
A proven track record of cultivating donors and securing gifts/sponsorships of $25,000 or more;
Passion for the mission of HOBY;
Exceptional skills establishing and cultivating strong relationships with all types of people;
Proactive in deepening current supporter relationships and forging new ones;

An entrepreneurial spirit;
Demonstrated ability to think strategically about resource development opportunities and successfully execute a plan;
Resourceful with a strong ability to creatively solve problems;
Team oriented approach and collaborative mindset;
Outstanding verbal and written communications skills;
Experience building new programs or initiatives.
