Overview

As a key member of the executive team, the Director of Development (part-time) will play a central role in raising the critical funds needed to support Lamp for Haiti’s humanitarian and health care mission. This part-time position (2+1/2 days per week) is an exciting opportunity to work flexibly while building the advancement program supporting Lamp for Haiti. Operating out of the northern New Jersey region (which forms the Lamp’s base of support), this position will serve as the primary fundraising professional working closely with the Executive Director (based in Philadelphia) and the organization’s president (based in northern New Jersey) and reporting directly to the Executive Director to ensure the agency’s continued growth.

The Organization

The Lamp for Haiti is a US nonprofit whose primary activity is the operation of a health care center in Cité Soleil, a huge slum on the edge of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Complementing this central activity are a number of programs that are designed to reduce the causes of illness, build community cohesion and respond to other critical needs of the community. The Lamp is, above all, a community organization. It utilizes an all-Haitian staff and works with the people of the area to build a responsive and durable community institution.

All of the Lamp’s funding comes from individuals and small family foundations in the US. The Lamp also holds various fundraising events, such as a Haitian art sale each November. The agency also receives substantial donations in the form of medicine from a number of medical institutions. The Lamp for Haiti has improved and expanded its services over the last two years with the hope that this vital work will attract adequate financial support. The Lamp is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit; donations are fully tax deductible.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Working closely with the Executive Director and Founder, assist in the development of a strategic plan to grow the Lamp for Haiti’s philanthropic program and fundraising revenues through combined annual program, individual and major gift support, special events, private foundation grants, and donations of medical and other supplies.
Oversee implementation of a strong annual direct mail campaign, including the development of high quality solicitation materials and developing appropriate reporting mechanism to track effectiveness.
Responsible for planning and coordinating individual cultivation and major gift solicitation receptions. Coordinate an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of major and special gifts donors in coordination with the Executive Director.
Research potential corporate and foundation funding prospects for Lamp for Haiti while assisting in the development a variety of high quality grant applications, proposals and written materials.
Work in conjunction with the Executive Director and Founder to create and implement internal reporting/meeting protocols to track progress to goals in each of the above revenue streams.
Other responsibilities as required.

Coordinate the planning of the agency’s major fall fundraising event and art show ensuring the development of a detailed timeline, production of all printed/collateral materials, mailing lists and schedules, volunteer communications and approval process. Manage and support other special events as required.

Minimum Qualifications

A successful candidate will have 3-5+ years of relevant work experience, preferably in nonprofit fundraising and development. The candidate must be able to work independently while developing appropriate reporting mechanisms with senior management as well as ability to develop strong relationships with the agency’s senior volunteer leadership. Specifically, candidates should show:

Strong overall development experience with an understanding of fundraising best practice.
Excellent skills in written and verbal communications, attention to detail, judgment, and strong relationship-building and customer service skills.
Strong planning, organizational, researching and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to think strategically with the goal of build programs that will support Lamp for Haiti’s continued growth and operations over the next 3-5 years.
Interest and commitment to Lamp for Haiti’s mission, goals and programs while effectively representing the agency with the highest professional standards.
Knowledge of donor database software, MS Office, internet tools.
Ability to work independently while proactively communicating with Executive Director and Founder to ensure appropriate reporting and approvals.

Compensation

The Director of Development is a part-time, salaried position with a range of $25-35K (for 0.5FTE) depending on availability and experience.
