Position Overview:
The Director of Marketing provides vision and leadership in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of all marketing strategies in support of the museum’s mission and long-range goals. Consistently and accurately promotes the museum’s brand through a variety of marketing channels. Develops integrated marketing strategies that expand visitation and program/event participation. Makes informed decisions based on relevant market research and the latest marketing trends and concepts. Partners with cross-functional teams to plan and execute all friend/fundraising campaigns, special events and initiatives. Provides leadership to the marketing team and drives initiatives that focus on income-producing strategies that ensure financial goals are met.
Position Responsibilities:
Leadership
Prepares and executes strategic marketing business plans to support museum offerings and financial outcomes.
Provides leadership to the team responsible for market research, advertising, internal/external communications, creative design, website and online marketing.
Manages multiple projects simultaneously, ensures quality, efficient and timely work production; consistently meets deadlines and prioritizes workflow for marketing team.
Strategic Planning and Analysis
Strategizes with the Director of Community Advocacy and Public Relations Manager to support public relations strategies and timing of communication distribution.
Strategizes with the Sustainability and Growth team to design and implement a strategic marketing plan that supports the outcomes identified in the Development business plan.
Partners with directors cross-departmentally to develop marketing plans to increase new membership sales and renewals, class/program registration, facility rentals, and new income generating initiatives.
Partners with the Visitor Experience team to drive visitation, membership and program/event participation to meet or exceed earned income objectives.
Develops marketing strategies for outreach to key museum constituents to meet or exceed contributed and earned income goals; proactively contributes new ideas and creative solutions that help increase income.
Marketing
Oversees the development of all marketing campaigns while managing the marketing budget, including advertising, public relations, online marketing, direct mail, print collateral and signage.
Builds brand awareness and works to strengthen museum-wide external communications by enforcing adherence to the Style Guide with all departments.
Creates and executes media planning.
Implements and manages the advertising plan, working closely with the Creative Manager, to ensure strategic planning while staying within budget and on deadline.
Manages creative development and production including direct mail, e-marketing, and all print and display marketing collateral materials.
Teamwork and Collaboration
Collaborates with Learning and Experience team to effectively promote programs, events, classes and workshops into marketing and communications efforts.
Works closely with the Director of Development to devise strategies to engage and cultivate sponsors, and leverage relationships to support marketing objectives.
Prepares and manages marketing budget and reviews financials with finance department.
Builds relationships with outside organizations to address the needs of the community and build brand awareness for the museum.
Supports the President/CEO and other key staff with speeches/talking points, special events and community relations.
Market Research and Analysis
Partners with cross-functional teams to assess data and develop marketing plans to support programs, exhibits and other offerings relevant to audience interest and/or needs.
Interprets qualitative and quantitative marketing data and trends from surveys and focus groups, Google Analytics, regional demographics, industry benchmarks and competitive information.
Analyzes data, makes informed recommendations and creates solutions that support museum programs and operational plans.
Stewardship and Community Focus
Acts as an Ambassador and actively shares information within area communities to raise awareness of the museum and to drive visitation.
Proactively identifies, recruits and leverages expertise and resources to create win-win community partnerships.
Staff Development and Management
Hires, trains, evaluates and manages direct reports to ensure efficient, productive and knowledgeable staff and teams.
Completes the performance management process for direct reports and consistently meets all deadlines; creates individual professional development plans for all direct reports.
Minimum Requirements/Skills/Certificates:
College degree in Marketing or Communications and/or equivalent related experience
Minimum 8 years in a marketing capacity; minimum 5 years leadership experience
Experience in a non-profit organization preferred; an educational or arts focus is desirable
Excellent communication skills with proven ability to build community relationships and collaborative partnerships
Strong writing and editing skills for both marketing and fundraising initiatives, including print collateral, letters, grants and museum publications
Thorough understanding of marketing philosophies, branding, strategic planning, creative, media, web, public relations concepts and techniques
Excellent strategic, financial and project planning skills
Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret market research to provide direction and support for the museum’s short and long-range goals
Strong Computer skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Power Point; proven ability to quickly learn new systems and software
