Events / Membership Coordinator – Los Angeles Waterkeeper – Santa Monica, CA

Los Angeles Waterkeeper (LAW), a dynamic nonprofit organization founded in 1993 to protect and restore the Santa Monica Bay, San Pedro Bay and adjacent waters, is seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our team as Events & Membership Coordinator. The Events & Membership Coordinator will manage Waterkeeper’s events (including our signature Making Waves fundraiser and Stand Up for Clean Water paddle event), maintain the organization’s donor database, coordinate appeals and member mailings, manage website and electronic mailings, and support efforts to increase LAW’s brand recognition, grow and mobilize our membership, and assist with fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities:

Event Management

On an annual basis, develop and implement a master events plan with clear goals, objectives and action plans to achieve desired outcomes. Major events throughout the year include:
LAW’s signature Making Waves fundraising event that attracts 350 guests;
LAW’s signature Stand Up For Clean Water outreach event that attracts more than 350 paddle-boarders and guests; and
At least 8 smaller events related to fundraising, outreach, and programs (e.g., Coastal Cleanup Day site).
Coordinate all aspects of each event, including: develop/manage a timeline; organize event planning committees; serve as a liaison with the venue and vendors; assist with development of event program and inviting speakers; manage sponsor recruitment; coordinate invitations, event promotion and ticket sales; secure auction/raffle items and in-kind support; recruit/manage volunteers; and manage event day-of.

Member Communications

Manage LAW’s Annual Report and regular donor mailings (e.g. appeals, renewal letters, holiday cards, etc.) by maintaining calendar, drafting content, managing layouts (with consultants as needed), developing mailing lists, working with printer and mailing house, and overseeing actual mailing and/or electronic distribution.
Support donor cultivation activities with individual and major donors, including maintaining updated donor prospect lists, developing membership and major donor outreach materials, and helping schedule and participate in meetings with major donors/prospects.
Work with outside design consultants to develop LAW brochure and other collateral materials as needed.
Oversee LAW membership benefits packages (for individual and corporate donors), and refine as needed.

Web/Online Communications

Oversee updating of LAW’s (and affiliated) website(s) to ensure information is accessible, accurate, and up-to-date.
Draft and circulate monthly online newsletter The Surge and other e-advocacy efforts, including maintaining calendar, working with staff to develop and edit content, format, and oversee electronic distribution.
Develop and implement social marketing strategy and maintain LAW’s blog and social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube, etc.).

General Communications/Branding

Work with LAW’s communications/PR consultant to:
Develop and implement annual LAW membership/communications plan;
Work with LAW staff to integrate communications elements into the organization’s primary campaigns;
Coordinate LAW’s marketing campaigns, such as Dirty for the Drought, to build brand awareness of our organization and issues in which we engage;
Support media outreach as needed, including maintaining media database, drafting and sending out press releases/media advisories, coordinating press conferences, and tracking media coverage.

Database Management and Donation Acknowledgements

Maintain LAW’s Constant Contact and eTapestry (donor/contact manager) online databases, including data entry, preparation of reports, using database to communicate with supporters through mailings, online communications and event invitations.
Maintain accurate database records of all donations received, including grants, corporate and individual donations, and create and send acknowledgement letters for gifts received.
Assist in generating prospect and mailing lists from database, including ongoing cleanup and removal of duplications of data.
Coordinate LAW’s overall contact management, including developing and implementing strategies to more effectively and efficiently manage data.

Administrative

Coordinate LAW’s Development Committee, including organizing meetings, taking/distributing minutes, and follow-up as needed, and serving as primary liaison with Board on membership, communications and events activities.
Recruit and manage any interns needed to support event and membership work.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Applicants must have a college degree and at least two years of membership, communications and/or event experience, preferably in the nonprofit arena. Candidates must have database management experience (preferably with eTapesty, Constant Contact or similar software), excellent oral and written communication skills, and experience with website and design software. He/she must be hard working, extremely organized, self-motivated, enjoy working in a team setting, and demonstrate a deep commitment and passion for conservation and environmental protection.

Physical Requirements

Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment, and attend off-site meetings. Travel to various meetings and sites throughout the county, which may involve exposure to traffic and weather conditions. On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk; operate a motor vehicle; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; use telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; and lift or carry weight of 50 pounds or less. Work both inside and outside with exposure to weather, odors, dust and pollen.

Salary, Benefits & Terms

Salary: $48,000-$52,000, based on qualifications

Schedule: Full Time position

Benefits: Paid health and dental insurance, vacation and sick leave

Start Date: As soon as filled (February 8 preferred)
