International Program Coordinator – Foundation for Community Development and Empowerment – San Rafael, CA

Position Announcement:

The Foundation for Community Development and Empowerment (FCDE) is seeking a dedicated individual with a passion for international development! The internship would be based both in the Bay Area and in Uganda.

FCDE is a grassroots international community development organization working in East Africa. FCDE enables local communities to direct and achieve their own development objectives by increasing the capacity of existing community-based organizations (CBOs). FCDE’s model integrates a number of underlying principles of sustainable development to create a unique approach that has long-term positive impact on entire communities. Specifically, FCDE ensures that local voices direct development by utilizing peer-based models for skills transfer and hiring personnel that have long-term experience and investment in target communities.

Position Summary

This is one year contract as an International Program Coordinator (IPC) commencing with a 3 month, state-side, full-time position working with the International Operations Manager (IOM), who is based in San Rafael, CA. For the remainder of the contract, the IPC will be based in Rukungiri, Uganda. The International Program Coordinator, under the supervision of the International Operations Manager initially and the Program Director (PD) when in country, will provide strategic support to the IOM and a network of local partner organizations, primarily through supporting FCDE’s in-country program development in Rukungiri. The basic responsibilities of the IPC include supporting FCDE Site Team, partner organizations, and host families to be internship-ready and savvy; and assisting with FCDE’s capacity building workshops, M&E of program impact and participating in additional site activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

U.S.-Based – initial first 3 months the IPC will be oriented on FCDE mission and international development philosophy while working to advance FCDE’s ongoing intern recruitment activities.

A. Intern Recruitment Support (100% of the state-side work)

In coordination with the IOM, respond to online internship inquiries
In coordination with the IOM, identify career posting sites to post available internships and enter into database. Maintain and note when posting expires and create a schedule for reposting and updating listings. Where possible follow up with brochure mailings.
In collaboration with the IOM, provide support in social media efforts and create a schedule of postings promoting isla internships. Expand reach on social media sites.
Contact University offices whose abroad programs could include isla.
Assist with salesforce implementation data readiness
Research online media outlets for promoting the Warren Campbell scholarships
Research Development Issues and best practices and other topics germane to FCDE work for posting on blogs, facebook and for use by staff.

While in Rukungiri Uganda, the IPC will support the site team’s ongoing program work as a member of the Rukungiri/FCDE site team.

B. Internship Program Development (approximately 30% of the time)

Provides regular feedback to Site Team and US team on key internship elements and processes, with aim of assessing internship placements. Examples of key internship elements include, developing position descriptions for internship placements, preparing materials for orientation week, support practices for intern integration into host organizations and families, educational workshops, work plan development process, etc.
Review existing internship documents and handouts; as necessary, revise and update internship-related materials.

Actively support and review partner organization and host family internship placement preparatory work and ongoing support processes. Provide feedback and recommendation, documenting best practices.

C. Local Partner Capacity Building and Monitoring (approximately 40% of the time)

Assist in providing support during partners training, consulting (one-on-one or small groups), as well as site visits to support the development and ongoing success of partner organizations’ programmatic activities.
Help develop and deliver materials and training to build partners’ skills and capacity so that they can carry out their programmatic activities successfully, strengthen the efficacy of their programs, and enhance organizational development.

D. Online and Social Media Development (approximately 30% of the time)

Guide LPOs staff in creation of social media pages (if not already in place) to provide general organizational information, program information, success stories, and FAQ to be shared with potential donors and partners
Take lead in uploading and updating FCDE and LPOs program pictures, stories and videos on FCDE facebook and ISLA pages.
Research on Development Issues and best practices and other topics germane to FCDE work to post on blogs.

Other Duties and Activities

Perform other related duties and activities as assigned by the IOM or PD.

Desired Qualifications

• Education: Completed university degree and currently enrolled or completed a graduate degree and/or substantive work experience in international development.

• Prior Experience: The equivalent of at least one year experience working with international or local community development projects.

• Skills and Abilities: For this position, FCDE seeks energetic and professional individuals with a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a sense for implementing creative solutions. Other required skills are

Minimum 2 years of experience working with an International development organization in a proven leadership role in an Africa.

Previous experience living and working in a different culture
Excellent oral and written communication
Strong organizational skills
Excellent computer skills in word-processing and excel
Motivation and commitment to work independently.
