Market Manager – Hollywood Farmers Market – Portland, OR

Job summary

The Market Manager works with the Board of Directors and other market staff to develop and maintain the Hollywood Farmers Market and the Lloyd Farmers Market. The primary focus is the vendor programs for both year-round markets, but the Market Manager is also responsible for many administrative duties including office and site management, oversight of the token program and maintaining positive relationships with HFM’s vital community partners. The Market Manager also assists with marketing and program development where needed.

Qualifications

The Market Manager must have strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with a diverse group of partners, including farmers, consumers and community organizations. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and able to work well in groups and independently.

Technical skills, including experience with Excel (or equivalent), WordPress, Constant Contact (or equivalent) is important. Program development and coordination experience is a plus. Experience working in farmers markets is also preferred.

The Market Manager must be willing to work outside in varying weather conditions on market days and have the ability to perform some heavy lifting, squat, reach and perform other physical tasks.

Duties

During the height of the market season, weekly tasks are typically more prescribed and consistent than during the off-season. In the off-season, the Market Manager, while still managing two year round markets, reports on the previous year activities and begins to plan projects for the future market seasons.

General duties

Recruit, orient and manage vendors for two year-round markets

Work closely with a Board of Directors. Attend monthly board meeting and committee meetings where appropriate

Be the primary contact for the HFM organization and provide administrative support for the organization and both markets

Train, support and supervise the Token Program Coordinator

Communicate and collaborate with other HFM Staff to coordinate all activities related to the market

Serve as chair on the Vendor Committee

Maintain complete files and databases for vendors, entertainers, community partners, etc.

Maintain vendor relations, both with the market and the community

Enforce market policy

Assist Development Committee as needed with program development, grant applications and community partnership opportunities

Assist with the creation of marketing material and outreach as needed.

Represent HFM/LFM at the Annual Market Manager’s Forum and Farm Direct Marketing Conference and other outside meetings as appropriate.

Hours and pay schedule

The starting salary for this position is $32,000 and is paid twice a month. Hours per week vary; the Market Manager is expected to be flexible in this regard. In general, however, approximately 40 hours per week are anticipated, with slightly more during the regular market season (May through November) and slightly fewer during the remaining months of the year. The Market Manager must be available to work the hours that the markets are open, including all Saturdays during the regular market season, the first and third Saturdays of each month from December through April, and every Tuesday year round. The Market Manager provides supervision for seasonal hourly staff and interns where appropriate. This position reports directly to the Board’s Staff Committee, who manage all salaried staff and provide support for hourly staff management.

Required certifications/licenses:

This position requires a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

Valid food handler’s license must be obtained within a month of hire.
