The Ecology Center and Recycle Ann Arbor, affiliated environmental organizations, seek a full-time Marketing and Communications Director who will be part creative director, part campaign strategist, part messaging guru and marketing expert. The position will play a key role in expanding the two organizations’ reach and fully realizing the potential of recent branding work. S/he will be an employee of the Ecology Center and will develop and implement strategies to educate our communities, generate earned media, supervise our digital and print publications, and oversee the web and social media presence for both organizations.
Organization
Founded in 1970, the Ecology Center works to develop innovative solutions for healthy people and a healthy planet. In recent years, the Ecology Center developed the country’s leading product testing service for toxic chemicals; created a statewide Health Leaders Fellowship program; and led campaign efforts to expand transit service in southeast Michigan. The Ecology Center is the parent organization of Recycle Ann Arbor, founded in 1977, which works to build zero waste communities through convenient and innovative services. Recycle Ann Arbor operates four major programs – a curbside collection service, drop-off station, Reuse Center, and Recovery Yard.
The Ecology Center has offices in Ann Arbor and Detroit. Recycle Ann Arbor has three sites in Ann Arbor and the neighboring townships. The main offices of both organizations are located within three miles of each other and you will have dedicated office space at both locations. Both workplaces are fast-paced and fun working environments with a network of supporters, coalition partners, and allies across the state and country. You will work with staff, contractors, and interns at both organizations to develop and carry out marketing and communication strategies.
Major Responsibilities
The Marketing and Communications Director will work with Ecology Center program staff on advocacy and education campaigns; with our development team on strategic fundraising initiatives; and with Recycle Ann Arbor’s business units and front office on program marketing, social media, and organization branding.
Specific responsibilities include:
Lead the development of a multi-year communications and marketing strategic plan designed to elevate the visibility and recognition of both Organizations, individually and together, and build sustained visibility and support for our initiatives.
Work with program and development staff to optimize Ecology Center’s email advocacy and increase campaign impact, funds raised, and list growth through online organizing and acquisition strategies.
Work at both the business unit and corporate level at Recycle Ann Arbor to define and implement marketing/communications strategies and programs, local advocacy development, and brand awareness.
Work with the Ecology Center’s Creative Team on managing our Salsa+SalesForce based CRM to load, segment, and send email blasts.
Oversee development and production of print and online publications for development and program functions.
Oversee media relations for both organizations.
Manage organizational social media and marketing strategies and grow both organizations’ impact on social media, training key staff on social media best practices.
Ensure both websites are regularly updated with fresh content and manage staff and contractors to troubleshoot technical problems with the websites as they arise.
Stay informed on emerging online technologies through relevant blogs, lists, trainings, and conferences, implementing best practices for the online programs.
Track, report, and analyze relevant metrics, using performance data to inform site and email strategy.
Oversee the drafting and editing of online content across platforms – email, web, blog, and social media.
Recruit and manage venders and contractors at both locations.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated record of leadership in developing and implementing effective communications and marketing strategies that include brand management, digital and print publications, web and social media, earned media, and media relations.
Strong track-record of managing successful multi-faceted communications campaigns, including developing winning earned and paid media strategies.
Knowledge and passion for environmental causes and demonstrated commitment to social justice and progressive social change.
A proven track record in working collaboratively in team based work environments, and the ability to effectively oversee and coordinate the work of contractors, interns, and support staff.
Excellent communication skills: writing, editing, listening and presenting
Foster and maintain relationships with national, state, and local press corps and editorial boards.
At least 5 years of experience in grassroots campaign communications and marketing work with at least three years in a management role.
Experience with CRM’s and CMS’s, ideally including Salsa, Drupal, and Salesforce. Experience developing and executing data-driven online engagement and fundraising plans.
Ability to foster a cooperative, team-oriented work environment
Ability to work collaboratively with other department heads and lead cross-department outreach initiatives
