The Workforce1 Career Center (WF1CC) system operates in coordination with the NYC Department of Small Business Services (SBS) and the New York State Department of Labor (DOL) to attract, prepare and connect qualified candidates to job opportunities throughout New York City. By using a combination of recruitment expertise, industry knowledge, and skill-building services that strengthen candidates’ employment prospects, Workforce1 makes strong matches for job candidates and businesses alike. WF1CCs require the attention of professionals who are able to support major change initiatives, as well as ensure the success of a demand-driven system.
The WF1CC system will be expanding to include ten new “Workforce1 Expansion Centers”. Urban Upbound formely known as (ERDA) is responsible for day-to-day operations and meeting outcomes goals for the Long Island City Expansion Center.
Founded in 2004 Urban Upbound formely (ERDA) is an innovative nonprofit organization located in Long Island City, Queens working to transform and improve New York City public housing neighborhoods by providing residents with the tools and opportunities necessary for self-sufficiency and economic mobility. ERDA’s Workforce Development Program aims to create opportunities for residents to work in jobs that pay a living wage and are connected to meaningful career paths. Clients are provided with on-going case management and support from job search to employment retention.
The Long Island City Expansion Center Career Counselor is an ERDA employee who works closely with the entire Expansion Center team. This person is responsible for providing career development services to individuals visiting the center for placement assistance. The Career Counselor will also facilitate job readiness workshops and maintain a case load with follow up from assessment to placement and retention. The Career Counselor will also provide extended case management services including income support and support services referrals (both internal and external) as needed. The Career Counselor also serves as the center’s Community Partner Liasion
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assisting Front Desk with Check in of candidates in times of heavy recruitment traffic.
Work with candidates to identify employment opportunities throughout the Workforce1 system by sourcing through Worksource system database.
Familiarity with the job market, various industries and career ladder opportunities.
Provide assistance to candidates whom are not ready for immediate job placement through resume review and updates, interviewing practice and supportive service referrals
Follow up with service partners to connect clients with needed resources to overcome barriers to employment (i.e. ESL classes, GED preparation, hard skills training programs, etc).
Conducting real time data entry in multiple database systems efficiently and accurately maintaining the systems 100% accuracy rate.
Maintaining contact with candidates to assist recruitment team to fill on open employment opportunities.
Serve as Community Partner Liasion to center by identifying new Community Partners and maintaining relationships with existing Community Partners.
Identify candidates for online learning opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years of Career Counseling experience required to include strong resume development experience.
Bachelor’s Degree required.
Experience meeting program outcomes and goals.
Knowledge of Workforce Development programs and Workforce industry trends.
Typing of 40WPM.
Experience with Microsoft Office programs.
Ability to enter information accurately into databases.
Must be comfortable with public speaking and able to work with diverse groups of people.
Ability to work with clients providing career development and wrap around counseling services.
Excellent time-management skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
