Data Quality Fellow – EducationSuperHighway – San Francisco, CA

Location: San Francisco

The Company:

EducationSuperHighway is the leading non-profit focused on upgrading the Internet infrastructure in America’s K-12 public schools. We believe that digital learning represents an unprecedented opportunity to provide every student with a world-class education and that every school requires high-speed broadband to make that opportunity a reality. EducationSuperHighway’s data-driven programs help accelerate upgrades in America’s schools. We work to raise awareness of the school connectivity gap, provide technical and procurement expertise to states and districts, and advocate on behalf of students to influence policy decisions. Our work has helped shape President Obama’s ConnectED initiative and served as a catalyst for modernization of the Federal Communications Commission’s $3.9 billion E-rate program.

The Team:

The FCC’s July 11th 2014 E-rate modernization order will provide EducationSuperHighway with data on the broadband infrastructure in every school district and the prices that districts are paying for their connectivity. The data quality team is focused on making it possible for EducationSuperHighway analysts and consultants to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity to increase accountability, measure progress toward the ConnectED goals, and lower the cost of broadband through price transparency.

The Role:

The Data Quality Fellowship is a 10-week opportunity to contribute to the data collection and categorization effort required to make recommendations to states and districts, helping them understand the role they can and should play in bringing broadband access to their K-12 public schools. You believe in collecting data, analyzing it, and drawing conclusions to ensure that all decisions and actions are based on substance. You know that when it comes to the analytical process, “garbage in, garbage out” applies. You are someone who takes pride in your work, not only because it is the foundation of EducationSuperHighway’s mission and approach, but also because you just do. If you decided to make a career out of selling zippers, you would be the best zipper salesperson out there, because that is just how you are. You are passionate about data; you see more than just a set of numbers and facts, you see a puzzle waiting to be solved, a tool for convincing people to do what is right for kids.

What You Will Do:

Contact districts to make sure they each provide the accurate data required
Identify, research and contact other organizations that are cost-efficiently purchasing mass broadband within each state to assist in national pricing analysis. This includes state master contracts, consortia and Research Education Networks.
Categorize all data collected according to the EducationSuperHighway taxonomy, following up with the data providers to clarify as needed to do so
Collaborate with analysts and consultants in analyzing the data, helping them understand the nuances of the data set so that they do not draw any erroneous conclusions
Collaborate with the product manager in identifying strategies for improving our data collection tools and thus your efficiency

You have:

Bachelor’s degree
Impeccable attention to detail and work ethic
A faith in the potential of the public education system and the power of technology to transform it
Energy that is contagious. Aspirations that are large. The ability to catalyze action.
Potential. You have always stood out, and always will.
Drive. You know what you want: to be part of a team making a real difference. You go after it.
