Development Assistant – Center for Democracy in the Americas – Washington, DC

The Center for Democracy in the Americas (CDA) seeks to bring an eager and committed staff member on-board to work directly with the executive director, staff and board members on implementing the fundraising plan critical to the success of an NGO devoted to issues relating to Cuba and Latin America relations with the U.S. This position is ideal for someone who wants to build their skills as a development professional.

The Center for Democracy in the Americas is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) public education and advocacy organization located in Washington, DC dedicated to changing U.S. policy toward the countries of the Americas. CDA has programs that work on Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela, and a focused set of issues in the region at-large. Our mission statement can be viewed here.

The tools we use for achieving our goals include taking fact-finding missions to the region, often with bi-partisan delegations of U.S. policy makers; conducting cutting-edge research; formulating strategies for changing policy; producing reports and analysis for a growing and influential audience of U.S. policy makers, senior journalists, academics and activists, in the U.S. and the region at large; and engaging in outreach, hosting public events, disseminating our ideas through the traditional media and social networks.

Specific responsibilities for this job include:

Prepare and coordinate correspondence with all donors and prospects including solicitation letters, acknowledgements, mass mailings, and individual letters.
Produce materials including informational packets and any follow-up materials required.
Process all contributions received.
Track all contributions and donor activity in Salesforce and in appropriate paper filing system.
Responsible for maintaining and updating donor database and appropriate email lists. Creates fundraising reports as needed.
Provide major assistance and support of logistics, fundraising, and program development for annual awards event.
Assist with logistics of all fundraising activities including local and regional activities, outreach events, conference calls, etc.
Track foundation deadlines and oversees timely contact with foundation program officers.
Coordinate the assembly of foundation proposals and reports.
Compile and track call sheets for Executive Director. Correct and locates phone numbers as needed. Schedule and manage time for completion.
Research foundation and individual prospects. Compile background information for meetings.
Monitor fundraising calendar and donor communications calendar. Coordinate efforts to see that fundraising activities are completed in a timely manner.

SKILLS/EXPERIENCE

2-3 years’ experience in advocacy NGO or congressional office.
High proficiency with MS office suite, internet research, and database management.
Experience with donor management/fundraising software databases such as Salesforce.
Ability to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks with attention to detail in a fast-paced team setting.
Excellent oral and verbal communications skills.
Attention to detail a must.
Ability to work with a broad range of people including major donors, board members, foundation staff, and other constituents.
Ability to work independently and with professional discretion in performing work assignments.
Computer maintenance and IT trouble-shooting skills a plus.
Good sense of humor; patient and calm demeanor.
Strong interest in Latin America, and an open-minded approach to learning the politics and policies of the region.
Fluent in Spanish a plus.
