Agency Description:

Seven Tepees Youth Program is a non-profit, community based youth development and college access organization that provides comprehensive services to low-income youth grades 6th-12th. Through the programs we offer our youth, we supplement their lives with the building blocks that will help them create positive successful futures for themselves, including social competency skills, academic skills, healthy self-esteem, role modeling, and exposure to new options and possibilities. Our Learning Center Program includes After-school Tutoring and Enrichment, Outdoor Education, Mentoring, Job Training and Community Service Activities for approximately 90 youth and families. Our College & Career Program provides college and career advising services at 3 sites: International Studies Academy, Mission High School and at the Seven Tepees Learning Center. The College & Career Program creates a college-going culture at each site and provides direct college access programming.

Mission:

Seven Tepees Youth Program is dedicated to impacting the lives of inner-city youth. Our mission is to work with urban youth entrusted to our care to foster the skills they need to make lifelong positive choices and to create their own opportunities for success. The name Seven Tepees represents the diversity of the seven continents as well as the Native American tradition of connection to nature and care of the land.

Primary Responsibilities:

Assist the Program Coordinator to implement a Learning Center program that will support young people in reaching their academic goals. Act as the liaison between the youth, their families, and the schools. Monitor and document individual and group program objectives and outcomes. Create and maintain a safe, supportive, and multi-culturally sensitive environment.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

Assist with the implementation of an after-school curriculum.

Develop and implement a Learning Center enrichment program run by staff and volunteer teachers that may include: various arts, computers, media, leadership, health education, counseling groups, job training, nutrition, and/or other topics of interest to youth. Generally two classes are offered each day for 9-week sessions.

Support volunteers in tutoring youth, and tutor youth as needed

Support group times and activities

Lead enrichment times and teach classes

Case-Management

Academically case-manage the 11th grade class:

Develop trusting, professional relationships with youth and families on your caseload.

Work with youth to ensure their ongoing involvement with all Seven Tepees programs, academic success, and discovering personal passion.

Communicate regularly with parents/families and support them in getting involved in youth’s education. Share information regarding academic and social progress.

Meet regularly with teachers and school counselors to advocate for youth, review academic and graduate plans, and ensure youth are supported at school sites.

Complete quarterly in-takes and goal setting interviews with each youth. Establish short-term and long-term intervention goals for each youth. Identify and focus on youth’s strengths.

Create academic plans with each youth. Review transcripts and update plan each semester.

Design interventions to meet individual needs, including matching with tutor, referral to counseling, etc.

Organize completed paperwork, case notes, and other documentation in permanent files and in database for youth and families.

Ensure youth are fulfilling participation requirements and outreach immediately to anyone who is not.

Facilitate the Junior Career Exploration Program (CEP):

Arrange career exploration field trips and presentations

Facilitate the Financial Literacy Program

Facilitate career exploration workshops

Match students with a summer internship and monitor their progress

Assist with Trips and Events. There are about five overnight trips each year, as well as, monthly community activities.

Coordinate, promote, and/or lead outdoor education trips.

Coordinate, promote, and/or lead community activities (at times on weekends).

Co-Lead various Learning Center events, including Holiday Party, Awards Night, Mentor Kickoff, and Gratitude Meals.

Support the Volunteer Program.

Assist in the recruitment and orientation of volunteers.

Assist in the matching of volunteers with appropriate youth.

Lead the Snack Program.

Plan and prepare a healthy snack daily with the Middle School Program Assistant.

Maintain the kitchen/snack area.

Clean up after snack daily and put all dishes away. Fill and empty the dishwasher as needed. Keep the refrigerator tidy and organized. Empty trashcans as needed and bring large garbage cans inside after trash collection.

Attend staff meetings.

Attend and participate in all supervisions, full staff meetings, and high school staff meetings, as determined by Program Manager.

Other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Minimum 4-year college degree

Demonstrated success in motivating and managing high school students to meet high expectations in youth development, experiential learning, and/or service learning

Demonstrated ability to cultivate and leverage resources to achieve outcomes

Results-driven; commitment to utilizing data to take informed action

High degree of flexibility and adaptability; can work within and thrive in an ambitious, fast-moving environment, while also driving toward clarity and solution

Strong learning orientation (e.g. constantly learns on one’s own, exhibits strong self-awareness of and initiative to develop one’s growth areas, accepts and promptly incorporates feedback)

Exceptional organizational skills; keen attention to detail; time management and follow-up skills

Ability to work effectively with youth, staff, parents, volunteers and board members of diverse backgrounds (economic, racial, cultural, linguistic, religious, ability, sexual orientations, genders, educational abilities, etc)

Valid CA driver’s license and clean driving record

Ability to get a Class B Driver’s License

This is a sensitive position; fingerprinting will be required.
