Overview:
This is a great opportunity for a candidate to become part of a team advocating for workers. We are looking for someone who has a passion for workers’ rights and social justice, strong writing skills, and is interested in developing their interviewing, fact investigation and advocacy skills.
SEIU Healthcare 1199NW’s mission is to unite, build power among, and improve standards for healthcare workers and to fight for quality, affordable healthcare for all Washingtonians. In support of these goals the Legal Assistant will play a key role supporting the legal team of SEIU Healthcare 1199NW.
General Duties:
Manage case files including: procuring supporting documents, manage deadlines, and constant and consistent client contact
Intake new grievance/arbitration cases including: investigation of facts including interview witnesses, drafting detailed factual summaries, document review, and scheduling
Write evidence summaries, must have proven ability to synthesize large amounts of information into a factual summary
Handle calls and correspondence with members, attorneys, etc., schedule appointments
Perform complex and varied legal clerical work involving considerable independent judgment, initiative, and accuracy
Other duties as assigned
Custodian of legal documents and records, establish and maintain filing systems. Filing, tracking, scanning and document retrieval
Prepare and process legal documents, such as complaints, unfair labor practice charges, settlement agreements, and routine correspondence/documents requiring judgment as to content, accuracy, and completeness
Qualifications
Two or more years of clerical experience in a legal setting, or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Labor union or labor law experience preferred, but not required
Working knowledge of modern office practices and procedures
Knowledge of legal terminology, legal format and standard legal instruments preferred
Ability to assemble data, ability to effectively meet and work with people from diverse backgrounds/cultures, ability to handle stressful situations.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Strong analytical skills (writing skills tested)
Ability to work independently, under pressure, prioritize deadlines, and handle confidential issues and materials
Commitment to justice for working people
Valid driver’s license, automobile insurance and a working automobile required
Microsoft Office Suite (will be tested)
Intermediate Word ( 60 wpm), Excel, Outlook, internet research
Working knowledge of Power Point
