Legal Assistant – The Climate Reality Project – Washington, DC

The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit organization founded by former Vice President Al Gore, is offering a full-time position for a Legal Assistant to serve the organization in its Legal Department. This position will play an integral role in a fast-paced organization that combines strategic campaigns and cutting-edge communications to win concrete victories on the path to solving the climate crisis.

Climate Reality has offices in Washington, DC, and Boulder, CO. This position will be based out of the Washington, DC office.

General Overview: The Legal Department provides legal counsel and guidance to the organization’s programs and communications. It is involved with all legal aspects of the organization’s operations, including but not limited to, the drafting and negotiation of contracts; development and implementation of procedures necessary or advisable to satisfy the organization’s risk management objectives; managing the organization’s intellectual property portfolio; advising on employment-related matters; regulatory compliance; and maintaining tax-exempt status. This position will support the team in day-to-day operations, maintain the team’s files, information and systems enable efficient and effective work, and often liaise with Climate Reality staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Management of digital and hard copy filing, by creating and maintaining files, business records and database records.
Owning and managing legal records (e.g., trademark portfolio, insurance policies) to ensure quick and efficient access to information.
Preparing and managing of form contracts.
Managing the tracking and approval process for contracts.
Managing incoming requests by maintaining matter intake list and tracking assignment of attorneys to specific matters.
Maintaining the Legal department calendar with team schedule, organizational events and deadlines.
Preparing and reviewing regulatory forms for filing.
Coordinating or drafting responses to administrative inquiries by state and federal regulators.
Assisting with maintenance of corporate books.
Preparing and submitting legal expenditure requests for approval and processing.
Assisting with implementation, monitoring and enforcement of organizational policies, such as record retention policy.
Keeping and updating legal forms and manuals.
Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree.
Experience in an administrative support role.
Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities within deadlines.
Self-starter with ability to perform without significant direct supervision.
Detail-oriented individual with ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills and time management skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Power Point, with particular expertise in Excel.
Proficiency with Mac preferred.
Proficiency with a CRM platform (i.e., Salesforce) preferred.
Prior non-profit experience a plus.
Experience and awareness of cultural diversity, ability to work effectively with a diverse staff, partner organizations, volunteers and other stakeholders.
