Americans for Responsible Solutions (ARS), the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and retired Navy combat veteran and NASA astronaut Captain Mark Kelly, is seeking an experienced political communications professional to serve as Press Secretary.
Founded in 2013, ARS works to affect legislation, shape the national dialogue, and reduce gun violence in our communities. ARS PAC works to elect candidates who show the political courage to stand up to the gun lobby, are passionate about preventing gun violence in our communities, and who commit to taking action once elected.
Principal Responsibilities
The Press Secretary promotes ARS’ mission, principals, and work across a range of media markets.
Specific Duties
Maintain and expand ARS relationships with reporters, TV bookers, and key local media; assist with organizational promotion in national media;
Serve as an on-the-record spokesperson for the organization;
Proactively identify news opportunities to promote ARS;
Pitch ARS spokespeople to TV, radio, digital and web series on an ongoing basis;
Develop and execute press events, including staffing ARS principals;
Own or assist in creation of external communications materials, including statements, press releases, press notes, and memos;
Other duties as assigned.
Ideal candidates demonstrate excellent writing skills under tight deadlines, are detail oriented, and have 3-4 four years of political communications experience. Candidates with experience on at least one political campaign or on Capitol Hill are preferred. A good sense of humor, a willingness to travel, and a willingness to work long hours during the height of campaign cycle are also required.
The position is based in Washington, D.C. and reports to the Communications Director. Salary commensurate with experience and competitive benefits including medical, dental and a 401(k) are provided.
