L.A. Kitchen is a nonprofit organization that operates non-profit programs and
revenue generating services. Its mission is to ensure neither food nor people
ever go to waste. To achieve this, L.A. Kitchen partners with regional farmers
and produce suppliers to secure fruits and vegetables that our kitchen staff,
culinary trainees and volunteers process to make fresh, nutritious meals tailored
to the needs of our community.
L.A. Kitchen is launching the Grocery Guides program in partnership with AARP.
The Grocery Guides program brings low income, food insecure older adults into
grocery stores to learn ways to incorporate healthy food options into limited food
budgets. Participants learn how to read food labels, how to calculate unit pricing,
and about cost-effective techniques for buying fruits and vegetables. The
program is part of the AARP’s initiative to amplify the connection between health
issues among the low income 50+ and food options available to them.

Summary of essential job functions:
The Program Assistant is responsible for supporting the Program Coordinator in
all aspects of managing LA Kitchen’s healthy grocery store tours for seniors. This
position will offer support with communications, logistics, and scheduling in
addition to helping manage and train volunteers to lead tours.
Detailed responsibilities:
Recruit volunteers to fill all needed roles
Assist in scheduling volunteers, tours, and organizing logistics
Assist in training volunteers using materials and guidelines
Assist in developing promotional materials
Connect with community partners to recruit tour participants
Monitor store tours and ensure volunteers are covering key areas and
completing evaluations
Distribute and collect evaluation materials from volunteer tour leaders
Assist in compiling evaluation results and preparing reports
Ensure tour attendance is being tracked and feedback is collected
Manages email communications and phone calls with volunteers and
contacts with community partners
Maintain program files
Education and Experience:
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
Experience in volunteer coordination
Experience or interest in nutrition, food justice, or public health a plus
Excellent interpersonal skills
Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
Professional and timely with phone calls and email communication
Ability to manage multiple projects and work in a fast-paced environment
Technologically proficient; skilled in all aspects of Microsoft Office,
especially Word and Excel
Bilingual (oral and written) in English and Spanish (preferred)
Salary/Hourly: Hourly $10 – $13 per hour
Hours: 15 hours per week
Part Time/Full Time: Part Time – Temporary (1 Year)
