Background: Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is an innovative partnership among the Microsoft Corporation, Angelina Jolie and other interested philanthropists, law firms and corporate supporters. KIND is dedicated to providing both pro bono representation and positive systemic changes in both law and policy to benefit unaccompanied immigrant and refugee children. Launched in fall 2008, KIND is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has field offices across the U.S.
Responsibilities: KIND seeks a full-time Program Assistant at its Headquarters in Washington, D.C. to provide administrative and program support to the Co-Directors of Legal Services, the Deputy Director of Legal Services, and the Deputy Director of Technical Legal Assistance. The staff member will have but not be limited to the following responsibilities:
1) Provide administrative and program support to the Legal Services directors in the development and implementation of organizational priorities, policies, and procedures for KIND’s national legal services program;
2) Review, edit, and format policy and legal guidance documents to assist KIND’s legal services team and pro bono partners;
3) Provide country conditions research and related support to the Deputy Director of Technical Legal Assistance in the drafting of amicus and appellate briefs;
4) Support the legal services team in the recruitment and retention of pro bono partnerships with law firms, corporations, and law school clinics; and
5) Assist with office administration and operations, case management, and data and metrics tasks as needed.
Qualifications for the Ideal Candidate:
1) Experience with office organization and management, particularly in legal settings;
2) Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children, or experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma;
3) A strong record of cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills;
4) Ability to work collaboratively, and preferably, prior experience working with attorneys, law firms, or other legal service providers;
5) Experience in data management;
6) Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel;
7) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
8) Experience or familiarity with immigration and/or family law and immigration authorities;
9) Bachelor’s degree required; and
10) Spanish speaking preferred.
