Program Assistant – Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) – Chicago, IL

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation’s most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 1.4 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 450 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Program Assistant to work with Midwest Program attorneys in our Chicago office. The candidate must be able to efficiently handle administrative tasks such as: proofreading and preparing written materials, scheduling and coordinating internal and external meetings, coordinating and booking travel, processing expenses, managing budgets, and research projects.

Responsibilities:

Performing legal filings and providing legal support;
Performing and writing up factual research;
Scheduling and facilitating internal and external meetings;
Maintaining calendar appointments and meetings;
Coordinating travel arrangements;
Editing, formatting, and proofreading documents;
Processing invoices and business expenses;
Providing general administrative support and performing ad hoc projects as needed.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree;
Previous administrative or paralegal experience a plus;
Excellent written and verbal communications skills;
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, organize and coordinate multiple tasks, set priorities, follow organizational procedures, and perform quickly and accurately under deadlines;
Ability to maintain confidentiality a must;
Excellent time-management skills;
Ability to work well under pressure and be detail-oriented; and,
Advanced computer skills in Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
