Huckleberry Youth Programs, in collaboration with BAYAC (Bay Area Youth Agency Consortium) AmeriCorps is seeking AmeriCorps members to work at the Huckleberry House. The position is through BAYAC AmeriCorps, a federally funded national and community service program. AmeriCorps members begins in August 2015 and ends in July 2016. Members spend 32 hours a week at Huckleberry House and 8 hours a week (on Fridays) with their regional AmeriCorps team. In addition to a monthly living stipend, AmeriCorps members receive health insurance, child care (if needed), and an educational award of $5,730 at the end of their 11 months of service.
Huckleberry House provides youth in crises temporary shelter, therapy services, case management and linkage to referrals and after-care follow up. The main goals of the program are family reunification and family strengthening.
AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Huckleberry Youth Programs (HYP) is a critical provider of essential safety net services for high-needs youth and their families in San Francisco and Marin County. For over 40 years, HYP has developed and maintained prevention programs that promote the health and leadership of youth, and, as a result, divert youth from violence, crime and gang involvement, as well as other harmful behaviors, including running away, drug/alcohol abuse, risky sexual activities, and involvement in the juvenile justice system. Huckleberry House, the oldest program provided by Huckleberry Youth Programs, was the first shelter in the U.S. for runaway and homeless youth and has served as a model for hundreds of other adolescent shelters nationally. The agency employs 50 staff members, and operates on a $4 million annual budget.
BAYAC AmeriCorps is a collaborative of over 30 community service organizations that serve youth and families in all 6 counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. As part of AmeriCorps, BAYAC members commit to a term of service in a FULL TIME position. Members provide direct services to children and youth. BAYAC AmeriCorps also aims to develop emerging leaders and to strengthen communities through the relationships and programs developed by the partner agencies.
HUCKLEBERRY HOUSE
RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR ASSISTANT, AmeriCorps (2 openings)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Residential Counselor Assistant is an integral member of the Huckleberry House team, with the primary responsibility of providing support and oversight to sheltered youth. Over the course of a year of service, the Residential Counselor Assistant will gain skills in youth development, assessment, and crisis intervention.
Specific job duties include:
Escort to and assist clients at appointments and meetings in the community (i.e. medical appointments, school, etc.)
Assist in-house clients with meal preparation
Assist lead residential staff with case management tasks as assigned
Escort and supervise clients on outings in the community
Assist clients with school work or homework
Develop and conduct in-house youth development activities with clients
Supervise clients in the daily schedule at the shelter
Answer the crisis hotline phone calls
Documentation of all client interactions in their file
Attend and participate in daily client review meetings
Attend and participate in weekly staff meeting
Attend and participate in agency trainings
Attend supervision sessions with Residential Coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology or related field
Provide a valid First Aid Training certificate, a recent TB test, and medical clearance
Criminal Justice clearance required
Possess a valid CA driver’s license and possess a driving history that allows the candidate to be enrolled into the Agencies auto policy
Experience working with youth at risk; Passion for connecting with and engaging young people
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Highly organized, creative, innovative
Must be able to work evening and weekend shifts
Ability to take initiative and work proactively
High level of professionalism and ethical standards
Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred but not required.
Tech Skills preferred: Word, Excel, Internet skills
