Artists Striving to End Poverty (ASTEP) was conceived by Broadway Musical Director Mary-Mitchell Campbell and Juilliard students to transform the lives of youth using the most powerful tool they have—their art. Today, ASTEP connects performing and visual artists with underserved youth in the U.S. and around the world, using the arts to awaken their imaginations, foster critical thinking, and help them break the cycle of poverty.
ASTEP seeks a personable and detail oriented individual as Volunteer Manager. The ideal candidate is self-motivated with management experience, strong relationship-building skills, and a passion for service. Like all members of the ASTEP community, the Volunteer Manager should demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission and values of ASTEP and should have substantial expertise in all areas of responsibility.
The Volunteer Manager is responsible for managing the recruitment, selection, training, placement and appreciation of volunteers in support of ASTEP programs in the U.S. and internationally. This position places emphasis on nurturing and retaining volunteer artists. This role is central to the growth and success of ASTEP’s vision of cultivating a community of artists who make using the arts a tool to empower youth a primary part of their lives and practice.
Working under the supervision of and reporting to the Director of Programs, the Volunteer Manager will commit to 20-32 hours a week and is based in the office in midtown Manhattan. This position begins October 1, 2015.
Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Manage the ASTEP Volunteer Artist application process, including responding to inquiries, database management and filing, interviewing and training potential volunteers, and placement.
Provide on-going support to volunteers throughout their placement and coordinate volunteer evaluations.
Manage volunteer recruitment efforts in collaboration with program and communication staff.
Coordinate group volunteering opportunities with corporate partners.
Plan and execute volunteer appreciation events.
Represent ASTEP at public events when necessary and participate in ASTEP activities.
Qualification requirements:
Experience in managing volunteers and volunteer programs is required; at least 2-3 years experience a must
Must be detail-oriented
Experience motivating and training groups
Outstanding time-management abilities
Strong administrative skills: planning, organizing and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Excellent communication and people skills: listening, one-on-one conversation, public speaking, and writing.
An appreciation and understanding of diverse populations is critical.
Experience with Salesforce CRM or similar database systems
