Communications Associate – WomenStrong International – Washington, DC

WomenStrong International, a consortium of non-governmental organizations in five countries implementing women-driven solutions to urban poverty, seeks an associate to provide editorial services and content development for a variety of outlets. The ideal candidate will have reporting experience with a mainstream news organization.

The goal of this position is to provide support to the Executive Director and Deputy Director in the creation of content that helps build WSI’s brand, as well as to offer technical support to the five WSI Consortium members in the creation of content for WSI. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of a new start-up organization with lots of potential for professional growth. Please note that WSI has a strong preference for candidates located within the New York City – DC corridor.

The primary job responsibilities include:

Becoming familiar with WomenStrong’s mission and five WSI Consortium members, to be able to identify, report on and compile stories that illustrate the important work being done on the ground in the five WSI venues
Writing a variety of blogs, articles, captions, opinion-editorials, columns and other communications that supports the development of the WSI brand and furthers the organization’s long-term goals
Editing content submitted by the Consortium members, many of whom do not speak English as their first language, as well as content developed by the leadership team and outside WSI partners
Assisting in the posting of content on WSI’s website and on social channels in which the organization engages, including Twitter and Facebook, Medium and Huffington Post
Administrative tasks as necessitated.

Qualifications include:

3+ years of reporting experience with a mainstream news organization
Degree in communications, journalism or equivalent work experience
Experience in content curation
Strong experience editing challenging content
Excellent grammar and spelling; attention to detail
Broad experience with social media, including blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
Community management experience a plus
Understanding of the role of content in marketing, branding and positioning
Well-organized, proactive, entrepreneurial
Self-starter who enjoys working on small teams
Commitment to the highest standards of accuracy, balance and fairness
Experience working in a multi-cultural setting or overseas
Comfortable in a start-up environment
Positive, respectful, hard-working
Native English speaker
