Communications Intern – The Marine Mammal Center – Sausalito, CA

The Marine Mammal Center is a nonprofit veterinary research hospital and educational center with a mission to expand knowledge about marine mammals – their health and that of their ocean environment – and inspire their global conservation. The Marine Mammal Center is dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of ill and injured marine mammals – primarily elephant seals, harbor seals and California sea lions. Since 1975, the Center has been headquartered in Sausalito, CA, in the Marin Headlands within the Golden Gate National Parks, and has rescued and treated more than 19,000 marine mammals.

Communications Intern:

The Center is currently recruiting for a summer communications intern in the Advancement/Marketing Department. Contribute to the life saving work of The Marine Mammal Center while gaining hands-on experience in a busy communications department. Learn about how a nonprofit communications department operates while learning about marine mammal and ocean conservation. The intern will have the opportunity to attend educational lectures, as well as have the opportunity to spend 1 day per week volunteering on an animal care crew, gaining hands-on experience in the daily operations of the Center. This is an unpaid position and reports to the Public Relations Specialist.

Criteria:

The ideal candidate will be either an undergraduate (junior or senior), graduate or post graduate with a grade point average of 3.5 or better. The candidate should have an interest in pursuing a career in communications, and preferably is majoring or has majored in one of the following disciplines: journalism, liberal arts, marketing, communications, or similar. The ideal candidate will possess:

Interest in marine mammals and/or ocean conservation.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Poise, confidence, and outstanding organization and time management skills, with an attention to detail.

Ability to complete tasks in a productive, proactive manner with minimal day-to-day supervision.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).

Experience with Raiser’s Edge, Vocus, Creative Suite Programs, HTML, and/or social media is a plus, but not required.

Duration:

Internship starts May 18 (date flexible) and ends August 21. Ideal candidate can offer a minimum of 3 days a week for approximately 24 hours and a maximum of 5 days a week for 40 hours. The intern should be available to support occasional animal release events held on Saturdays, with a modified schedule those weeks. Preference will be given to candidates who are available on August 15, the day of the Center’s biggest annual fundraiser: Run for the Seals.

College Credit:

If the intern intends to receive university credit for their internship, they are responsible for making all arrangements with their educational institution.

Duties:

The intern will assist the Advancement/Marketing Department with a variety of communications, public relations and events related projects. These may include but are not limited to:

Daily media monitoring

Media list creation and research

Media database support

Researching and drafting social media content

Creating and submitting events to local event calendars

Support event logistics, including mailings, data entry and other administrative tasks as needed for Center events, including animal releases, corporate volunteer days and Run for the Seals

Catalog media mentions, assist with formatting and posting media mentions to TMMC website

Assist with media relations and outreach

Drafting press materials that may include pitches, press releases, bios, media briefs

Requirements:

Must have access to transportation to and from The Marine Mammal Center.

Must provide own housing.
