Design Museum Portland is seeking a full-time Development Associate responsible for cultivating and closing memberships, program sponsorships, and major donors to support the museum’s mission. Successful candidates will have a passion for design, education, and relationship building. The position requires the ability to identify prospective members, sponsors, and donors; build and foster relationships; articulate the museum’s mission and details about membership and programmatic activities to match donors to relevant opportunities to support our work; and actively provide stewardship to new and current supporters. This position works closely with and reports to the Design Museum Foundation Development Director.
The Development Associate will:
Manage logistics for donor outreach
Draft donor communication and stewardship materials
Generate acknowledgements
Perform prospect and grant research
Oversee a portfolio of active and prospective funders
Create opportunities
Write proposals
Manage invoices
Assist in fundraising event production
In addition, qualified applicants will have/be:
Experience in nonprofit organizations and development
1-2 years of direct sales/development experience, with proven success
Bachelor’s degree
Familiarity with development operations and best practices
Knowledge of GoogleDocs and other online software tools, particularly online databases
Self-starter with a strong work ethic and attention to detail — able to receive direction but also contribute under uncertainty, oftentimes collaboratively with other staff
Entrepreneurial, able to usher other people’s and other organization’s resources to our cause
A relationship builder, able to recruit others to the cause using limited resources
Able to fundraise by selling the vision of the museum and the quality of our programs
High level of comfort in making phone calls to prospects and funders to introduce the organization
Strong interpersonal skills, able to interact and sell professionally
Strong verbal and written communication skills, able to speak publicly and give presentations about the museum, and negotiate with funders
Hard worker, very organized, with a desire to help this startup grow
Overall: energetic, detail-oriented, personable, and nice
