Position Summary:
The Director of Development has primary responsibility for strategy and implementation of Headlands’ fundraising efforts. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director, directly supervises two Development staff, and works closely with the Board of Directors and related Committees. The right candidate will be at a point in their career where they are looking to make a real commitment – and see the direct impact of their efforts – to an organization experiencing significant growth.

RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to:
Management, Administration and Leadership
Set, implement, monitor and meet annual contributed income goals
Design strategies for annual fundraising activities across all areas
Strategize and contribute as a member of the organization’s senior leadership team comprised of the Executive Director, Director of Programs, and Director of Operations. Participate in organizational long-term planning
Manage Headlands Advancement Committee; support Board and Committee recruitment
Serve as liaison for Board Members on give/get and key contacts management
Oversee two full-time Development Managers who manage special events, institutional support, and membership programs
Oversee fundraising-related communications in collaboration with the Communications Manager
Ensure that department members adhere to organizational policies and procedures
Serve as a key member of the leadership team that sets the tone and culture of the organization
Represent and advocate for the overall wellness of the institution; Model behavior and organizational core competencies to all staff
Represent the organization internally and externally including amongst our donor and artist communities, peer organizations and professional associations
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director
Major Gifts
Direct and implement a robust Major Gifts program
Develop and manage systems and activities for full donor cycle: identifying new prospects, building donor and prospect relationships, gift solicitations, and donor stewardship and acknowledgment
Develop and implement successful fundraising campaigns, including capital and capacity-building initiatives
Fully engage and maximize roles of Executive Director, Board of Directors, and related committees to support the organization’s fundraising efforts
Special Events
Oversee and advise on strategy to support an active special events program, including donor receptions, member events, and other special events, including Headlands Benefit Art Auction, raising over $500K gross annually
Develop and manage year-round systems and activities for securing renewed and new corporate support, primarily in conjunction with Headlands Benefit Art Auction
Institutional Giving
Oversee and advise on strategy to support a robust institutional giving program, including foundation, government, and partner support
Establish and maintain systems to support strong funder relationships and ensure effective communication with funders and partners
Qualifications
Highly creative individual with ability to think strategically as well as logistically
Familiar with the local, national, and international arts and culture landscape
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Committed to working as part of a small team and collaboratively across departments
Mission and values aligned with Headlands’ mission and programs
Desired knowledge, skills, experience
3-5 years working in non-profit sector fundraising, particularly in the area of major gifts
Supervisory experience
Strategic/long-range planning experience
Experience with contemporary arts sector
Experience with public/private partnerships and/or experience working in a national park or public land environment a plus
Reporting relationships:
The Director of Development reports to the executive director and is the primary liaison to the Chairs and members of the Advancement and Auction Committees. The Director of Development works closely with every department of the organization and supervises two development office managers, as well as interns and occasional hourly support.
Physical requirements
Employee needs to be able to sit for extended periods of time.
Employee must be able to manage events, which includes occasional lifting and moving of AV equipment and furniture.
Due to the location of our campus, employee must drive and have a vehicle
