American Youth Hostels (dba Hostelling International USA or HI USA) is the 3rd largest hostel network worldwide and the nation’s leading hostel network with more than 50 hostels across the US. While HI USA may be the largest, we are admittedly different. Founded in 1934, HI USA delivers its mission through the delivery of educational programs, and engagement with local community members and travelers through its network of hostels.

SUMMARY

Located on Manhattan’s famous Upper West Side, HI NYC is surrounded by Central Park and Riverside Park, and is minutes by subway from Times Square and Rockefeller Center, the High Line, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Empire State Building and the ferry to the Statue of Liberty. HI NYC is a short walk from Columbia University and St. John the Divine and close to the vibrant neighborhood of Harlem.

HI NYC is seeking a full-time Front Desk Associate (PM shift) to the team and provide seamless check-in and check-out processes for guests, prepare for arrivals, process walk-ins, smoothly check in groups, provide information about services available in the hostel and in the community, protect the privacy of guests and colleagues at all times, and process cash/credit card payments.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Familiarity with the HI-USA mission and hostel locations.
Act as a representative of HI-USA and its goals in a positive and professional manner.
Create an open, efficient and friendly presence at reception at all times.
Maintain building security and safety of the hostel as well as personal belongings of guests.
Provide accurate and timely information upon request.
Accurate registration of guests in accordance with ASSD operating system.
Process all reservation requests, cancellations and changes (via phone, reservation line, email or fax).
Maintain appearance at reception: keep order behind front desk, keep lobby clean and clear, stock front desk items.
Work in conjunction with Community Engagement Coordinator to promote and facilitate all hostel events.
Handle money accurately: count floats at beginning of shift and reconcile total receipts at end of shift.
Investigate reports of problems in any part of the hostel—resolve as able, refer to manager if necessary.
In case of emergency, notify manager immediately and assist with evacuation of building.
This position requires the physical ability to perform any task associated with the operation of the hostel.
Attend meetings and training sessions as scheduled by management.
Help the hostellers in any way you can, including helping guests with theft, accident and incident reports.

SKILLS

The successful candidate will have a High School Diploma or GED and 1-2 years retail experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience; excellent oral and written communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Cloud; the ability to learn computer database systems; and superior customer service skills. Candidates must have a flexible schedule to work various shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
