Manager of Educational Programs – Bike Newport – Newport, RI

Summary

Bike Newport seeks an enthusiastic, passionate and organized bicyclist to lead biking and mechanics programs for youth and adults, to teach the fundamentals of safe cycling and basic bike maintenance, to inspire people of all ages to ride frequently, and to be a role model for biking for recreation and transportation.

In addition, the Manager of Educational Programs will work with cycling instructors and schools, local organizations, volunteers, parents and funders to build support and to schedule programs to reach and engage youth and families.

All Bike Newport staff act as representatives of Bike Newport and promote bike-friendly initiatives.

Location

Bike Newport education and community programs operate from three locations, all in Newport, RI: Bike Garage North at the Florence Gray Center, Bike Garage at Rogers at Rogers High School, and Bike Newport HQ at 437 Broadway.

Programs and Responsibilities

– Bike Garages –

organize, manage, and maintain space, tools, parts, and equipment.
organize, manage and maintain the “Bike Library”, our youth bike lending oversee collection, restoration, inventory, and distribution of recovered bicycles
teach community classes to improve bike skills and basic bike.
oversee Open Garage, where community members gather and learn bike repair from the pros.

– School Programs:

Bicycle Safety curriculum – work with school Phys Ed and Health faculty to develop bicycle education plan grades K-12.
Mini Mechanics – After school program at the Elementary School
Bike to School Challenge – semi-annual incentive program at the Middle School
Vikings Biking – after school bike club for high school students
Student interns – high school mentorship program

– Neighborhood Youth Programs, including:

Off Road Academy – mountain biking club, ages 6-18
Earn-A-Bike and Ride-To-Earn youth programs
Squid Squad – Middle School riding club

– Bike Friendly Community Efforts

Lead the Transportation Work Group of the Health Equity Zones partnership.
Lead the Roads & Routes Committee –community committee regarding road conditions and recommended routes
Bike Parking for seasonal events – encourage biking to events, provide bike parking and basic tune-ups citywide.
Community Events – support all bike friendly events, such as the Independence Day Kids Bike Parade

Candidate Requirements:

Bicycle maintenance and repair skills required.

Community and/or classroom teaching experience required.

Required training – if needed, Bike Newport will provide:

LCI – League Certified Instructor, League of American Bicyclists, or equivalent
Certified Bike Mechanic – Appalachian Bike Institute or equivalent program
CPR and First Aid
