Media Sales Manager – Society for Science & the Public – Washington, DC

The Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is seeking a Media Sales Manager to grow advertising revenue for Science News magazine, premier gneral interest science publication with a paid circulation of 95,000 and more than 1 million monthly unique visitors on www.ScienceNews.org. SSP is a nonprofit dedicated to human advancement through science. Science News magazine is supported by subscribing memberships to SSP as well as advertising, sponsorships and philanthropy. The successful candidate is someone who is motivated by the mission of our publications and organization as well as by attaining revenue success.

This position would be reponsible for generating substantial revenue growth for display and native advertising in print, online, mobile, digital and e-mail formats, as well as for incorporating advertising in integrated sponsorship packages for the Society’s science competitions, events and education activities. Compensation is based primarily on annual salary, with annual bonuses tied to meeting performance goals.

Responsibilities:

Increase revenue through advertising and sponsor content sales across all Science News publications and platforms, including Science News for Students, line with monthly and quarterly revenue goals
Create engaging and compelling proposals to advertisers and sponsors
Work with colleagues in philanthropic fundraising on combined sponsorship/advertising packages
Establish and maintain client relations and contaacts that lead to sales
Working with an assistant, manage accounts, campaigns, insertion orders and fulfillment of all display advertising
Maintain thorough understanding of industry trends and technology developments that affect advertising opportunities and revenue
Monitor, analyze and communicate market competitive data
Provide reqular reports on forecasts, pipeline management and new accounts and contacts
Asssist colleagues in preparing proposals for sponsors and donors

Essential skills and capabilities:

Experience selling print and digital advertising in niche-market publications, particularly in the nonprofit area
Ability to identify market opportunities and acquire new accounts, strong closing skills
Self-starter able to build up a small existing advertising program, create new processes and function at a high level with minimal supervision
Excellent written and verbal commnication skills, as well as listening skills
Create thinker, able to quickly conceive a new approaches and strategies

Required experience and education:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
Minimum 3-5 years of print and online advertising sales and related experience, including direct and agency sales
Experience with ad trafficking and lead-generation software
Srtong writing, organization and presentation skills
