ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

Project Avary’s mission is to build brighter futures for children with a parent in prison by providing emotionally and physically safe environments in which they gain a sense of community, increased self-knowledge, and valuable life skills. Our programs include an overnight summer camp, year-round weekend outings and retreats, case management, and caregiver support groups. www.projectavary.org

POSITION OBJECTIVES:

To manage and coordinate Project Avary’s residential summer camp for children and teens with incarcerated parents; develop and implement camp curricula; oversee the camp registration and program processing; oversee staff recruitment; assist with counselor and junior counselor staff hiring and management; develop and implement staff training; coordinate the annual gala to raise funds for camp.

This year-round position requires being on-site at Camp Avary in Mendocino County, California for 3 weeks in the summer. Outside of camp weeks, this position will be at our office in San Rafael 3 to 4 days during the week, and 2 Saturdays each month during the school year to coordinate weekend outings. The weekly schedule may fluctuate based on program needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ACTIVITIES:

Coordinate annual residential summer camp for children and teens ages 8 to 18.
Assist the Executive Director in the recruitment, hiring and supervision of staff and volunteers.
Oversee the training of staff and volunteers for each camp season. Oversee Junior Counselor Program.
Develop and implement staff training. Keep staff training handbook updated.
Research, develop, and implement program curricula to meet the identified needs of children of incarcerated parents.
Keep camp policies and procedures updated.
Oversee the camp registration/confirmation process, assuring that this process is executed in a timely manner and that programs objectives are met.
Oversee implementation of camp evaluations.
Responsible for inventory control and purchasing of camp supplies (not including camp food).
Write program content regarding camp activities for Newsletters, Camp Blog, and Face Book, and other publications.
Prepare regular analysis and reports of camp programs, based on goals and objectives set by the Executive Director.

Management

Responsible for staff recruitment.
Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee on boarding and providing career development planning and opportunities.
Maintain employee camp work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, time off, cover for absenteeism.
Manage camp budgetary and financial responsibilities and activities. Review and evaluate budget-to-actual reports provided by the bookkeeper to ensure accuracy.
Manage the preparation of camp budget forecasts on an annual basis for Executive Director approval.
Assist Executive Director with providing performance feedback to camp counselors and junior counselor to monitor employee goals and communicate expectations. These reviews are meant to empower employees to take responsibility and accountability for their jobs and goals.
Embody Project Avary Core Values on a daily basis and instill those principles in employees and campers. Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among all staff and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Three to five years’ previous experience in developing, implementing and managing camp programs and activities.
Masters or College degree in Education, Child Psychology, Social Work or related experience.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care.
Demonstrated skills in planning, organizing, managing and multi-tasking.
Ability to manage time, work independently, provide customer service and troubleshoot situations.
Creativity, vision, leadership and the ability to supervise and motivate staff and volunteers.
Excellent writing skills and communication skills.
Computer literate, with knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Compensation:

$50,000 to $60,000 (depending on experience)

2 weeks of vacation. In addition, the office is closed the week after camp, and 1 week at the end of the year.
